upgrading from a 400E, need some input

Guys,

I drive a 93 400E that I love, but am considering upgrading to a W210 or W211. Anybody have opinions on which version to buy? Or should I stick with the 400E (only 111K on it).

Boy, as a current 300E owner I can only say that I would love to have a 400E with the Sportline suspension. Do as I did, when I got my E320 I just kept the 300E. I wouldn't get what it's worth if I sold it and it is still my daily driver.

As for the W210 and W211, I'd say the current 2007 W211 is the best of the bunch. It just drives better than the earlier ones. It's as if Daimler-Chrysler have polished it to the point where it's now just about perfect.

Had the very same dilemma: 92 400E w/ 104K. One of the hardest decisions I've made in a while. Didn't have room for both the 400 and the 07 E550 I bought, but if I had had the room, would have kept the 400. Don't regret the 550 (much better car than the 210) but still miss the 400.

Get a W211.

There is NOTHING about a W124 that's better.

Even an E320CDI may be faster.

Welcome to the 21st century, then.

Except the quality of the leather, the quality of the capeting, the quality of the wheels, the cost of maintenance, the quality of the switch gear, the sound of the radio, steel vs glass sunroof, the shape of the trunk, the bulletproof transmission that has no turning gear sets in fourth gear, the nice colors, the visibility and finally, the likelihood that it will last for decades which isn't something that my E320 is likely to do do.

My 300E is going on 16 years old and it's taken us all over North American in comfort and safety. I wouldn't hesitate to take it to Alaska if I had to. It will cruise at 80 all day long. It will climb the the Grapevine going into LA in 100+ temps and with a packed trunk and do it without a problem. It will run through crosswinds so stiff that they would blow you over and do it without generating the least bit of excitement.

My E320 has only 18K on the clock and 14K of that has been long, driving vacations. It's performed flawlessly. Would I rather take the E320 than the 300E on a vacation, yes I would. Nevertheless, the E320 is certainly not better in every way than a W124.

I drive a 1992 500E and and 2006 E500. The cars are probably comparable in terms of performance stats. I prefer driving the 500E which feels better planted at 75mph and above, although the E500 has nicer amenities and gets better gas mileage. Some have said the 124's make the 211's feel like Toyotas - thats an overstatement. For the record, Car&Driver April 1992 test for 500E: 0-60 5.5 sec; street start 5.7; 30-50 3.0; 50-70 3.5; quarter mile 14.1@ 101mph; braking 70-0 166; 300ft skidpad 0.85g's. The car is more than a match for pre 2007 E500's.

Thanks for all of the input. I will likely get the W211 and then "attempt" to sell my car - in reality I will price it too high and not negotiate, thereby letting the wifey think I am trying to get rid of it but won't ever be able to find the "right" buyer.

W124 build quality...

While I love my W211 E350, the W124 had and has the reputation of being indistructable. Have a look at the following 5th gear W124 videos...what a car!

I find that surprising, because there are a few things I like about my W124 that are better than my W221.

Would you care to educate us here, and reveal to us upon what criteria you are basing your all-encompassing and doctrinaire opinion?
