Gas in car

What are your habits with gas in the car? Do you wait until the car has a couple of gallons of gas before you refill or do you do it earlier? I hate going to the gas station so usually drag myself there when I have only about 2-3 gallons left. My dad tells me it is bad for the car because air might get into the engine and also because of condensation might pollute the gas in the car? Is this something I should be concerned with? This sounds like a good question to post on "Car Talk" I was wondering if there's anything about a W211 that would make this a non-issue or if I should get into the the habit of getting gas when I'm at about half-tank.

Never heard about air causing a problem.. The big thing I have heard of is over time you get deposits in the gas tank and when you let your tank run down really low your fuel pump ends up sucking up the deposits which can clog the filter and reduce the life of the pump or possibly even kill the pump. I usually fill up my car when the "need" gas light first comes on I used to be lazy like you until I realized its a safety issue not having enough gas. One night I was driving home on the freeway and the lanes merged and some guy almost hit me so I honked and flashed my lights at him, ended up the guy followed me for almost a good 20 miles until I go to a stretch that I could go WOT until I lost him. After I pulled off the freeway and was lucky to have a gas station close my trip computer was reading I had 0 miles left of gas... Now I got lucky that time but if I would of only had 2 gallons at the start of this incident then I would of had a confrontation with the guy who might of had a gun.

First time hearing about that kind of problem, actually I never have never heard anything like that about air getting in the tank. I usually fill it up when its down to below 1/4 of tank.

I usually wait until the light comes on and I figured that still leaves me with 2-3 gallons. My dad mentioned something about condensation building up in the tank when so much of it is empty and some subsequent issues with corrosion. Just thought I'd run this by the experts here and inquire if this is something to be concerned with a W211.

CLK55
I have a quick newbie question. Just got a used 01 CLK55 a few days ago. In the manual it describes a Trip Computer. I can't seem to access when I page up and down thru the options on the Multidisplay. Do all CLK55s have the trip computer or was it an option or something? I get the odometer and trip odometer screen but from there it only goes to MPH, oil level, and service interval.

What I am looking for is the screen it shows that gives you # of gallons left, miles to empty, average speed etc.

(just noticed that this is the E forum. Oh well, maybe the answer is the same. If not I can post a question in the CLK forum.)

gas should not matter when you fill up only if you run out and will get a check engine light because of misfires

you have to press the arrows on the steering wheel... there are also buttons that look like pages, those scroll thru different menus.

I don't think it makes any difference unless you're close to running it dry -- but why ever take that chance? I wouldn't trust the warning light to give you an accurate picture. I fill up opportunistically when I am between 1/2 and 1/4 and I see a Mobil or Exxon -- the little key fob makes it convenient.

Thanks for the reply, but I did try that. In the manual there are several pages including a Trip Computer page. Flipping thru on my car I am getting all pages except that one. It doesn't show Trip Computer as optional, which is where my confusion comes from.

The fuel pump in the tank is lubricated and cooled by being submersed in fuel. Run the tank dry, ruin the pump. How much would it cost to drop the tank, remove the damaged pump, purchase a new one, and button up. I'm thinking a dealer would charge a grand or more.............
