Insurance Rates

I know this will vary by driver and state but what do you think insurance costs per month/year are for the 320 or 500. I'm curious to see how much more insurance would be for the 500 vs 320.

More than C320

I was paying $119/mo for the 2001 C320. So it was surprising to see the 2003 E320 is $`190/mo - almost double.

This is in Canadian dollars, incl tax. I am 43 and have maximum discounts for no claims, preferred parking, short drive to work, etc etc etc. Certas Direct (formerly CIBC direct).

Very disappointing they consider this a more expensive car to insure. Car cost almost the same and surely the E is safer, slower, etc... even has alarm, etc

Why?

Whyh? The old car was $60k, this was $70k, so that does not warrant that maginitude of increase.

It is not so much the cost of the car that determines insurance rates it's the cost to repair. Some cars have a low speed bumper crash and incur thousands of dollars of repair costs. Others may incur only a few hundred. The cost to replace air bags is also high. The new E has 8 of them. The likelihood that a car will be stolen will affect the rates. These are just some of the factors not to mention personal data.

Not cost of car but/....

...but that would mean the E is twice as likely to be stolen (in spite of tele-aid and alarm system which the C did not have!), or to cost a lot to repair, than the C. I can hardly believe that.

It is also not driver data; I have not changed in the week since I gave up the C and got the new E.

No, I just think they mis-judged this. The airbags is a true point, but I venture to think the E is driven more slowly than the C and is probably in fewer crashes. If they have data that shows the reason for sunch a large hike I would love to see it - but they tell me that data is secret, surprise surprise.

I was quoted about $1200/year for an E320, and about $1800/year for the E400. Interestingly, they actually quoted me on an E430 since they (Kemper) did not yet have the E500 in their database... even when I provided them a VIN!

BTW - these quotes reflected a multi-car discount, and the fact that no claims have been reported against our policy for over 10 years (and no speeding tickets, if you can believe that).

Old vs. New E Insurance

I don't have the figures in front of me, but it is costing me more to insure a new E320 than a 2002 E320. I wonder if the insurance rates aren't being held artificially high until the insurance companies see how well the new brakes work.
