Geez, censoring my title!
I just used the word that M-B uses to describe the cabin of their sedans, and was greeted with ****pit. Hey, forum administrator - we're adult enough to handle these words, aren't we???

Really Not Loud at All

So all in all, I would think it to be noticable only to types like me who like to focus on an engine's sound.

Please refer to my previous post. Net - if you are conversing with someone, and/or have the radio on, I really doubt if you would notice it.
Come to think of it, it almost sounds like the noisy lifters I had in an old Camaro way back yonder... which makes me think that it might indeed be correctable once the right M-B techs understand its root cause (the cast iron vs. aluminum block only goes so far with me).

I am going to my dealer tomorrow and do a demo ride on the 500 before I place my order. I will let you know about the sound. I can tell you the first time I did a demo ride I did not notice it.

also, for the ppl who bought cars off of dealers lots, not ordering and stuff......they do treat the test drive badly......i think.....my dad was going over 90.....very quickly too.....and everything was smooth.....but quick accelerations, an fast speeds are what test drives.....but getting the car early is a big pain reliever

i've driven my e500 for around 400 miles and haven't heard any clicking or noticed any pulling to the right. i am also very conscious of little noises which usually drives my wife nuts. hopefully, these problems won't come up.

At the E-Motion event I test drove 4 different E500s and 3 different E320s multiple times on the test track.
Never have I heard any unusual ticking sounds/noises; -- nor was I able to spin the tires with the ESP OFF.
The new E500 is one of the world's best designed cars!!

The ticking/clicking isn't too noticeable from the front. Get in the back seat in a quiet area and pay attention. Also pay attention for any unusual rhythmic vibrations and you'll probably know what everyone here is talking about...

My dog finds the HK sound system more exciting than exotic ticks. :o

It's coming from the front...
... and I am about to test-drive yet another E500 on Monday in the quest to decide between the 320 and 500. Again, the noise is only noticable when nothing else is going on inside the car (no conversation, radio, etc.). But I am skeptical of sinking another $7K on an engine that makes this kind of noise!

I am at 480 miles and have notice the sound since mile 1! I took it back to my dealer in NB. The service department checked it out and I was told that the reason is the doors are made from a lighter material than the old E and therefore do not offer the same amount of sound insulation. I don't buy it.
Besides the annoying ticking sound, I am EXTREMELY pleased with my car.

From the description I may have found the answer.
Here is a service description for the ticking sound that happened on another MB:
"Exam revealed collapse lifter's), checked for oil delivery exam revealed low delivery reaching intake elements on right bank due to restrictions in cam bearing bridge. R&R right camshaft bearing bridge and replace all hydraulic compensators (6) on right (intake) side. Cleaned oil passage and verified proper oil flow."
