Success! CLS wheels on E320 CDI
5 Attachment(s)
Just successfully mounted CLS wheels onto my E320 CDI;
18x8.5, ET28, 245/40/18 18x9.5, ET33, 275/40/18 Couldn't be more perfect for me. The sidewall is just beyond the fender but the tread is totally within the wheel well for both fronts and rears. And the ride is nearly no different than the original 16". Hooray! |
Looks good. I think you're the 2nd person to have successfully done this. KosherBenz was the first, I think.
|
Looks good! Let us know how much gas mileage decreases as a result though. :D
|
As for recording before & after mileage, I won't have any prior data. I've only had the car for one week!
|
Why would there be a gas millage decrease? The overall diameter of the wheel is about the same from the old 16? Right, the rims are larger but smaller tire. Compared to smaller rim, larger side wall?
|
The theory would be that there's a loss of mpg, due to the wheel/tire weight, ie. greater mass requiring greater energy to initiate rolling. Also inefficiency due to greater contact patch from the wider tires than the original.
FYI, wheel/tire weights; 16" OEM = 48 lbs 18" front = 52.5 lbs 18" rears = 56.5 lbs |
concur.... i went from OEM 16" to OEM 18" from E55 (near identical specs as
above) and there was mileage drop. on separate note...the 245 front would scrape the wheel arch under hard front compression with original shocks. i've since swapped to Bilstein HDs and the scraping is less (and I drive more sedately). other options would be to change from 245 to 235, or roll fender. oh...the above was for 99 E320 |

Looking good. A 1" drop and it will be perfect.

- I have stock 245's on the CLS rims up front and I have not scraped nor bumped anything in the fenderwell.
- I did notice 1-2 mpg loss after the CLS rims, but the improvement from the Kleemann module made up for it. - Congrats on ur wheels Choice, I love how they look on my MB - Here is a few pics of them on my car in case you missed them the first time I posted them up... http://www.mustangmods.com/ims/u/277/723/88608.jpg http://www.mustangmods.com/ims/u/277/723/88607.jpg http://www.mustangmods.com/ims/u/277/723/88606.jpg And here is what my old rims looked like during install.. http://www.mustangmods.com/ims/u/277/723/88600.jpg |

Diitto concerning KosherBenz post. After installing CLS500 wheels with Michelin Pilot Sports on my E320 CDI the car is more planted to the road and corners like a go-cart. No problems with suspension or brake interference. The OEM 16" wheels are wimpy - throw some good snows on them and use them in the winter. Never kept track of mileage, so no advice here.
Still waiting to chip - interested in Kleeman, but I would like to gather more information about the new Carlsson chip (to be apparently released in May) that is supposed to be more sophisticated, although much more expensive. J. Alan |
Since bigger wheels doesn't really have any significant advantage, (according to you guys) but visual satisfaction. I was wondering how about bigger rim and same width tires?
Instead of 245/40/18 ......stay at 225/45/18???? Would that have better acceleration? |

I dont know about you, but although I like to cruise in my car, I do like to have the ability to hug the corners if i want to (like on back roads or on/off ramps) Less sidewall means less roll on the corners. Also, why would you want to put a 225 on a 18inch rim? We dont drive Hondas! :y (More rubber on the ground = a car that handles better) |

If 245 will slow you down, why can't one stay w/ the OEM with for their non-sport Pre-07? How much significat performance can it get from 12.3 cm to 11 cm of side wall?????? I kind of need more exlaination on why, please.. Dont' just throw me w/ "we don't drive honda, or so ricy" |
I drive a rice too

Do what you want brother, if you want 225's go for it!
Id prefer not to squeel when i take a corner hard, and there is also less chance for my tires to break loose when I accelerate hard. And dont forget, the beefier tires look better. Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks, Ill stick with my 245/275's! edit: forgot another one, Rim protection... If you put a 225 on a 8in rim, they will get curbed really bad and I dont think 225's are made for a 8 inch rim(as in the front CLS rims) |
Remembered another great thing about the CLS500 wheels at the car wash - damn they are easy to wash and keep clean!

join the club! 245/40/18 275/35/18 |
Nice wheels. They look good on your E class

Tork Revo Wheels
I am considering these for my E320 Bluetec I am expecting in about ten days. Please tell me if these are a good selection.
Tork Revo HYPERBLACK 20 x 8.5(Front) + 20x9.5(Rear) with Nitto Neogen 245/30/20(Front) + 275/30/20(Rear). In hindsight, following a discussion with my son I think I should be thinking 19" instead of 20" ; 20" may be an overkill. Additionally, just to make it clear, I am a novice with these type of wheels and I will be driving this to the office and back; daily 153 miles round trip. Let me know what you think. PineBaron |
If you don't know what you're in for, I would definitely not go above 18" on a stock CDI/Bluetec suspension; it is designed for 16" wheels. I have 18" sport package wheels/tires on my CDI, and while it firms up the ride nicely without being harsh, at times it is obvious the suspension is too soft for the heavier wheels and stickier tires. I can't imagine how poorly a 20" set-up would ride/drive.

those CLS wheels look really classsy on an E-class. Like it :y

Wheel Dia. and weight when compared to OEM Tire Dia./Sidewall height and weight when compared to OEM Find the right balance between great looking wheels, comfort and practicality; the last one is so difficult to get right;:) . |
I agree about not going overboard with a car that isn't equipped with full airmatic (with 3 selectors... comfort, sport I & II).
if I have my car set on comfort (which most likely is similar to the standard setup that a non airmatic or 16" wheel equipped car is)... the wheels are floppy feeling... you need the dampening that the air system gives. I would certainly not go any bigger than 18s and I wouldn't use sizes bigger than 245/40/18 F + 275/35/18 R. (or 245/40/18 on non staggered). I wish that I had the setup from a true AMG ...that would truly allow for full usage of the extra rubber on the ground. note: actual tire sizes off of a CLS 18" wheel are larger than an 18" off of an E or AMG E (offset is 5mm diff.. but looks good on the car)... if you used CLS dimensions for tires... it would look like donuts on the car! thanks for the compliments on my wagon. |
I had those same wheels for two years now and then had them chromed last year because the chrome hides the brake dust better so it buys me a few more days of driving before I get crazy over the wheels not shining like they should:)
I have had 245-F and 275-R the entire time. I wouldnt change just to change and to be honest, the change to a 225 isnt going to make much difference in acceleration, but I would bet you'll miss the more stable wider tire up front. That combo of tire size I feel is a good ratio of front/rear with the wheel width they have. If you put too skinny of a tire in front, the car will feel like it is pushing the fronts through turns. I made that mistake on the first set of 19s and hated driving it and I hated the way it looked. Your 320 is the same color as my E500 and whether the wheels are chrome or satin silver, they look great. Kosherbenz, that burgandy color, sorry I forgot the real MB name of it, looks amazing and those wheels look even better on your car than mine. I love that color and thats a first I have seen on the E-class, but it looks terrific. |
Would the following work?
FRONT - 245/40/18 REAR - 275/35/18 Only thins I see mentioned here in the thread is 40's. Thanks |
I was never a fan of the wheels on the 07 sport package in the first place. When i saw these pictures I knew what I wanted. Owned the car for 4 days before putting on the CLS wheels. Traded my wheels and tires plus $300 for the set of CLS take offs. Then I saw that the guy I traded sold my wheels on e-bay for $1400! I love the look though,d would do it again in a minute!

Sorry...will post in the morning. Still haven't taken any....shame on me!
|
OK pictures finally up in the tread titled "My 1st MB"
Thanks, Matt |
The CDI screams for this treatment because MB only offers 16s on the car. The CLS wheels look great, though a slightly skinnier tire to keep the sidewalls within the wheelwells wouldn't hurt. Good to hear that the handling improves considerably.

Kosher,
Where'd you get that tint job on your CDI. Thats sweet. I got a 2005 Silver one and I need to tint the windows to complete the package. What kind of mileage you get with those wheels? I got 19" Mono blocks and I get about 31 on average 32 if I'm lucky and 33 with the wind at my back. :zoom: Thanks |
I still get 38 or so, but I havent taken any long trips really. I got it tinted in Catonsville and some small shop. Cant remember the name...
Check out www.racersden.net Its a local MD/DC/VA site |

Check out www.racersden.net Its a local MD/DC/VA site What the *$&$# am I doing wrong other than flooring it every now and then (ok every now less then) but even when I try to slow poke it and see what kind of mileage I can get I will only get 31.5 or 32 :nix: like I did this morning. And that was a 75 mile drive with at least 75 to 80% of it highway. Where do you drive your car? |

geez.. I have never gotten more than 23mpg ... nor has my father with is 500E ... you guys are lucky!
I mostly see about 11mpg in the city ... ughh |
|
Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
|
someone posted on here not to long ago they got 41+ mpg on a road trip in a CDI. thats over 850 on a tank of gas..
