Toying with idea

I've been thinking semi-seriously of trading my 2006 E500 with 9000 miles for a 2007 with exactly same options. I think I would like the extra power but I'm not sure. Test drove a 550 and it felt little different than my 500 around town but I think that the 550 might feel a significantly faster over 60mph and in high speed passing. Any thoughts as to cost/incremental performance trade-off? Am I losing my mind?

Its gonna cost you FAR more than you would have spent if you had bought an S Class instead of your current E Class when you did. You're gonna get so beat up money wise you will NOT get to love the new car because of what you paid for it. Wait & get the 2nd year of production of the next E Class. It will make the 211's look a little dated, and the change in car model will be far more rewarding to you than the purchase you are considering. What are you REALLY gonna get if you proceed with this idea? A new nose, a little more acceleration, no SBC, a huge financial hit, and not really much else.

Wait for the new E. Its just around the corner.

Good advice! Wait until the next generation E Class rolls out. I'd actually wait an extra year longer and not jump into it the first production year, especially if you plan to keep the car for a while.

The E500 is plenty fast. If you were driving a 320, I can maybe understand it but definitely not in this case. The E500 is probably in the top 95 percentile of vehicles in the road as far as performance goes. Enjoy your car -- and the extra $15-20K that you can later put towards the next generation E Class.

Don't get caught up in impulse buy or emotion of sitting in a brand new car. Do your analysis, is a slightly newer car worth all that money? The slight performance improvement will not satisfy your craving to spend the money, after a few months your new car will be an old car. It sounds like you are looking for a really fast car, save up for the AMG E then.
