W211 Newbee question

My E320 CDI does something unusual when I back out of the driveway. I back out slowly but there is this thud as it goes off the driveway on to the street. Like I was in a Soprano's episode and there was a body bouncing around back there.

I checked the spare and the tool kits. All are secure. I velcro'd the trunk mat down so it would not slide so it can not be that either. I also looked at the battery and I can not see anything loose.

Any ideas? Could it be 20+ gallons of diesel sloshing around?

TIA

Is your car equipped with the airmatic suspension? If so, read this:

If it doesn't have the airmatic, then I have no idea.

It does not have the airmatic. But sounds like a lot of people have experienced it. Will have the dealer look at it. I have 3 year CPO if it is the rear suspension I hope to heck it is covered.

Yep, looks like you are correct. Took it in and service manager drove it. Said at least on of the rear shocks needs replacing if not both. Will go in next week for surgery.

Thank you and thank g-d for the extended cpo

Now as I reverse, and slowly brake the noise seems to coincide with the braking but after a very small delay. Like the brake calipers are clamping down? Or could it be something in the drive line like a u-joint?

Weird

My guess would have been the shocks also. Anyway, schedule another appointment and specifically request a road test with the shop foreman and attempt to duplicate the noise heard.

It could be the bushing. I had the similar problem everytime I went over a speedbump. Took it in and replaced the bushing. No more thuds.

Do you know exactly which bushing? I would imagine there are several.
