Ran outta gas today.
Yes, yes, I felt like a moron, and my wife laughed her a$$ off for about 1/2 hour. I was about a block away from a gas station, so I borrowed a gallon can and all was well.
No questions here, just thought I would share my stupid desire to mimic the Seinfeld episode with Kramer driving with the car salesman to see how far the car would go with the gauge on E.
Oh, and when it says 0 miles to empty, you have about 10-15. I know. Really, I do......
Cheers
Edward.

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing about a year ago. I was too tired to stop at the station, so I figured I'd do it first thing in the morning. As I was pulling in my driveway the car completely died. I was literally 3 ft from actually pulling into my garage. I guess the slight incline of the driveway finished me off. At least it wasn't on a freeway during rush hour... I'll never let that happen again!

My friend was explaining last week about how he ran out of gas in his car. He was pulling into a gas station and when he was about 5 feet from the pump, the engine cut off and he "coasted" the 5 feet to the pump. Talk about perfect timing.

I had a similar experience with my previous car late one night when I was on US 90 in the middle of a swamp in Louisiana, about 10 miles from the nearest gas station. Fortunately, I was familiar with the area and knew exactly where the nearest station was.
Instead of suddenly "running out of gas", the engine would stop for a few seconds and while coasting the engine would come back to life. As time passed, the interval between the stops and restarts kept getting longer. I discovered that if I rocked the steering wheel side-to-side, the fuel pump was able to do a better job sucking up the last little bit of gas in the tank which allowed me to eke out the last few miles -- almost. Using this technique I was able to maintain forward progress until I was about half a mile from the gas station at which point the car would go no further.
I had to walk the remaining distance and carry two gallons of gas back to the car, but this outcome was certainly better than what it could have been (or what I deserved -- the car had a low fuel warning light which was working as designed. I should have heeded its warning.)
This was the first time -- and hopefully the last -- that I've run out, though I did cut it close in my CDI once when I got caught in an unexpected backup. When I refueled after that, I put 20.4 gallons into the tank which has a capacity of 21.12 gallons. I was in the single digits on the "miles to empty" display, though I figure I actually had enough diesel for between 14 and 28 more miles.
