Dual Automatic Climate Control (581)
Does anybody know if this option means the same as the 4 zone thermotronic? Seperate climate control for front/rear, left and right. My dealer said it was but didn't sound to convincing.

reset....isn't dual control what you get standard on an E320 with only front left/right controls and no digital readout
I thought the 4 zone control is what comes standard on the E500 that has front left/right controls and rear left/right controls (i.e. 4 zones) and has digital readout in front and back.
Therefore dual control and 4 zone control are NOT the same thing.

but thermotronic or whatever is the same as the e500 climate control, but the e320 is totally different, it doesnt have the sun sensor, and it doesnt have the same filter, and only a 2 person non digital readout....sorry forgot to mention to crazy, the age is 16 over here

I think if you go back and re-read the original question, it was asking if dual control is same as 4 zone thermotronic. The dealer said the answer is "yes", but I would contend the answer is "no".

question is not right !!!
581 is "4-zone climate control" not "Dual Automatic Climate Control" (my info is from dealer's netstar)
poropat started this thread with "Dual Automatic Climate Control (581)" with a wrong topic in the beginning.
"dual automatic climate control" only comes with e320 and if you buy an option 581 then you get "4-zone climate control" (same climate control as e500)

It must be listed with a different name in Australia, but the code is the same. That's why I was confused.
In the Mercedes options list it says "Dual Automatic Climate Control (581). There is no other option to chose from for A/C.
As the E-class has standard A/C (the non digital read out) the dual automatic climate control must mean 4 zone thermotronic. God knows why they have a different name.

Sorry mate,
But the Australian Optional Extra's sheet dated the 7th June 2002 used by all dealers lists:
#581 Automatic Climate Control,4-zone,THERMOTRONIC
Check with your specific dealer but the information given by MB Australia is correct.

Check the Australian web site under E-class, standard options.
Here's an extract from from the E500.

Understood, but the website is designed as a guide for potential buyers only.
You don't order a car through their website.
You use that information as an overview before you approach a dealership to place your order where all enquiries such as the "dual temperature query" should be answered,by refering to official factory ordering documentation.
That's why most websites and brochures state that you should always contact your local dealer for the latest information and updates as both can easily contain minor errors.

Your options list must be different from mine. I have documents with prices in AUD from the dealership called "Special Equipment E-class" that state the exact same wording as they do on the website with the code 581 next to it.
My question was whether or not it is the same as the 4 zone thermotronic as stated in the universal brochures.
I now know, thanks to the guys that know their codes that the answer is Yes.

poropat,
if you order 581 then you should have 4-zone climate control in your new e.
according to your description "Additional ventilation outlets in B-Pillars", this is another sign of 4-zone climate control.
