Tires

Any suggestions for tires for an 05 CDI?
Like performance but comfort is nice too.
Thanks

I recently bought Bridgestone RE960 all season high performance tires from Tirerack. This is highly rated, very quiet, much better than the original Conti tires.

Good judgment comes from bad experience.

Our E500 had conti's on that wore well and even to 30,000 miles.

1) Due to the tires wearing so well no changes were made to the car only tires were installed. I put Dayton UT1 HP tires on it. Noise cupping. Spent $400 for alignment balance. Still noise cupping on the inside edge. Replaced at 20,000 miles.

2) Then I got smart so I bought Cooper Master Craft as they had run very well on my heavy truck. At 5000 noise and cupping on the outside edge and inside edge of the tire. At 7000 cupping is so bad vibration in steering wheel. I have reviewed the alignment #'s and they are right on. Took it to MB dealer who also confirmed #'s as right on and told me to go to OE tires.

3) Tried to get help from tire resources and they state running too low a tire pressure run 36 psi in front vs 29 stated by factory.

4) Run 36 psi and now have hard ride and vibration noise.

5) Next tires will be OE Michelin or Conti's which ever I can get the fastest.

6) This will be 2 sets of tires in 27000 miles of which none were satisfactory.

Side bar,, Bridgstone owns and makes the Dayton UT1 technology tires as does Firestone. I run the SZ50 EMT tires from Firestone and they are great so I don't know what's up on these tires.

You might want to consider the ContiProContacts which are an OEM approved tire for several MB models including the E Class.
These tires are much higher rated than the OEM Michelin MX4+.
The Contis have a AA traction rating and are avalable in a V rated version.
I have had these tires on a previous BMW 3 Series and I was satisfied with their performance, especially in wet conditions.
My future Bluetec will have them on for three season use.

They might not be available in sizes for the BlueTec. I tried to get them for my E320 and the Tire Rack didn't sell them. I had to buy MXV4's.

I think the Conti's are available in sizes to fit the E350's 17" wheels.

Also considering New Tires.

I am thinking of changing tires on my 03 E500. Any recommendations on tires to help absorb some of the road feel. The roads are not too smooth where I live, and I can feel every little bit of an uneven road surface.

There is more to this than just tires; tire pressure, state of suspension, etc.

Yes, Bud, you are quite right. I purchased 245/45 x 17" V rated ContiProContacts for my Bluetec's 17" alloys. Tirerack charged $139 each + shipping. As you said, these tires are not available from Tirerack in the 16" size to fit the OEM wheels.

However, I have found that Tirerack doesn't always carry the complete range of tire sizes. For example, I wanted to buy 225/55 x 16" Michelin Pilot Alpin snows to fit the 16" OEM alloys. Tirerack doesn't stock this size, but Michelin can supply them.

Incidentally, these are the same tires that all 45 E320 CDIs were equipped with for the Paris - Beijing trek last October/November. Reports on the tires' performance through snow, mud and sand were very postive.

There were 45 cars?!? I thought there were only a few. From what I saw of the support of that endeavor, a model T could have made that run

BTW, where is your train? My car has transited the Canal.

For the Paris-Beijing trek, there were 36 "official" E320CDIs including 3 Bluetecs + 9 additional support E 320 CDI + 4 G 270CDI. All cars had the Pilot Alpins and travelled through some very heavy, mountainous snow conditions. More than one driver remarked on the E's ability (non-4Matic) to get through the tough stuff without problems. A third person is the rear plus luggage also helped traction !

My car was last reported today in Belleville, Ontario; ETA Vancouver July 13th.

Depends if you need all season tires. If you live in an area where you can use summer tires all year long, try the Conti Sport Contact 3 or Vredestein Ultrac. The latter may be difficult to find in the US.

My suspension is in good shape in general.

I purchased the car a few months ago, replaced rear shocks and replaced some of the front suspension bushings which were worn.
