Tires
Good judgment comes from bad experience.
Our E500 had conti's on that wore well and even to 30,000 miles.
1) Due to the tires wearing so well no changes were made to the car only tires were installed. I put Dayton UT1 HP tires on it. Noise cupping. Spent $400 for alignment balance. Still noise cupping on the inside edge. Replaced at 20,000 miles.
2) Then I got smart so I bought Cooper Master Craft as they had run very well on my heavy truck. At 5000 noise and cupping on the outside edge and inside edge of the tire. At 7000 cupping is so bad vibration in steering wheel. I have reviewed the alignment #'s and they are right on. Took it to MB dealer who also confirmed #'s as right on and told me to go to OE tires.
3) Tried to get help from tire resources and they state running too low a tire pressure run 36 psi in front vs 29 stated by factory.
4) Run 36 psi and now have hard ride and vibration noise.
5) Next tires will be OE Michelin
or Conti's
which ever I can get the fastest.6) This will be 2 sets of tires in 27000 miles of which none were satisfactory.

Side bar,, Bridgstone owns and makes the Dayton UT1 technology tires as does Firestone. I run the SZ50 EMT tires from Firestone and they are great so I don't know what's up on these tires.
These tires are much higher rated than the OEM Michelin MX4+.
The Contis have a AA traction rating and are avalable in a V rated version.
I have had these tires on a previous BMW 3 Series and I was satisfied with their performance, especially in wet conditions.
My future Bluetec will have them on for three season use.

I think the Conti's are available in sizes to fit the E350's 17" wheels.

However, I have found that Tirerack doesn't always carry the complete range of tire sizes. For example, I wanted to buy 225/55 x 16" Michelin Pilot Alpin snows to fit the 16" OEM alloys. Tirerack doesn't stock this size, but Michelin can supply them.
Incidentally, these are the same tires that all 45 E320 CDIs were equipped with for the Paris - Beijing trek last October/November. Reports on the tires' performance through snow, mud and sand were very postive.
