xenon question

Hi guys, I have a question regarding my standard headlight. Do I get xenon headlight ( not bi-xenon, I know that bi xenon is an option) if I ordered the car without bi xenon package and sport package? Because my headlights does not seem as bright as xenon. I heard that we get xenon for low beam for standard, is that true? Is H7 bulb is xenon? I am totally blind about xenon thing,so help guys.

thanks

Xenons are an option or come with the sport package. BiXenons refers to the fact that they are on both low and hi beam.

I am probably in the minority here but I am not $1200 impressed with them overall and would rather have the standard lights and the money in my pocket. many things appear purplish and while brighter, the low beams seem to have a shorter visible distance.

The standard lights on MB's, especially the newer models are still really good!

For what it's worth, the Halogen H7's you mentioned are the standard bulbs in the Porsche 996.

yipikaye,

you can get xenon headlights from e1 or e3 but as skymast said "The standard lights on MB's, especially the newer models are still really good!"

there is a legal issue for your headlights -- the low beam can produce 1000 lumens of light (allows 15% difference). so your headlights cannot go beyond 1150 lumens. (we don't like the car faces or behind us to have illegal bright lights, do we?)

one thing can cause your headlights not as bright as it used to be is your battery -- charge it fully and you will find both your headlights and sound get better. (I bought a charger from bmw which plugs into the cigarette lighter jack, you wait for red light turning into green then your battery is ready to go.)

No E1 or E3, no Xenon.

I'm assuming E1 and E3 are the option packages?

Anyway, if you do not get the bi-xenons, you do NOT get "single" xenon low beams. You will have the conventioal halogen headlights.
Bi-xenons have replaced the original, low-beam only xenons.

According to the MB webiste the E comes with "Variable-focus halogen headlamps with projector low beams and clear high-impact polycarbonate lenses". So that would seem that you only get Xenon with E1

That's right. But xenon in either high or low beam do not appear to be standard.

I agree that does seem like a good deal. Please let me know if you find anything else out about it, deductibles, exclusions, transferability, etc. Thanks for the heads-up though

Thanks jordan2334. I did some checking and warrantydirect has 7/100K for $2,560 with a $100 deductible or $2,760 with no ded. How much was the MB warranty if you don't mind me asking and does it have a ded?

You may want to shop the warranty around a bit before buying, my understanding is that you don't have to do it right now anyway.

I have always bought the warranty for my other cars. My last new car purchase (Honda Odyssey), the dealer wanted $1500 for the 7yr/100K warranty. A friend called a bunch of dealers and found the same warranty (after some bargaining) for $975, and our dealer matched it.

Personally, I think at around under $1500 this is a good deal, but at $2700 it seems to high. I have always had 3-4 big ticket items go bad on my car in the 7 years (and after the 3 yrs of factory warranty) (by big ticket items I mean around $300 or more). But with MB, your factory warranty is 4 yrs, but the expenses are probably more. If you still assume about 3-4 things go wrong at $500 each, $1500 maybe $2K is worth it.

I bet if you haggle with the finance guy (not the sales guy because they don't handle the warranties), you maybe able to get it for $1500. Try it, what's the worst that can happen,...they can say no!!

Does anyone know if these third-party companies are as reliable as M-B? I mean, I would hate to sink some serious $ into a policy only to have the company go belly-up before I need 'em (we are talking about 4 years out, guys).

Just look at the .com (and other fine companies) busts!

I wasn't aware that MB offers extended warranties. I know there are several aftermarket companies out there and every dealer seems to sell contracts from different ones. If MB has an actual extended warranty themselves, like General Motors, that would be much better and reliable than other companies.

Also, I don't believe warranty direct offers plans to California residents.

Rayscar,

My 7yr/100,000 mile warranty from the dealer was $2380 (and yes, it is MB and not third party). They would not discount (but I was in a hurry so it was far from "hard negotiations"). I don't remember the deductible (if any) and don't have the warranty paperwork yet as it's delivered with the car.

Guys -- you can get the same warranty for much less and not have to pay for it until the 4/50K expires. Do not be duped into the MB warranty up front.

www.carbuyingtips.com has a lot of information on this if you are interested

My 10/18 post on this thread was from a link from that site and it seems to be more expensive than what MB is offering.

I'll check that out. One thing to confirm is that the aftermarket starts after the initial four year factory is over.

Do you know how long you can wait to get the MB extended warranty?

to my knowledge you must puchase the MB extended warranty within the first 12 months of ownership.

I have two cars both covered by Warranty Gold warranties. While I haven't needed to use them (both are '01 models), the coverage is great and the prices were (and still are) pretty decent.

I think you can wait several years before buying with a mileage limit applicable but it will cost a little more the longer you wait. The other thing is that I think it runs concurrently with the MB warranty.
