Picking up E-550 Sport

Will pick up my new 4-Matic 550 in October from the dealer. It is the Sport with P2. I live 100 miles from the dealer and wonder what things I should inspect closely before leaving the dealer as it is difficult to just drop by if I have a question. The dealer will do their usual orientation (second car I bought from them) but it is hard to think of all the questions. Have read on this site to check for a certain version of the Nav software. I believe it is the 2007.1 NAVTEQ released Jul 07?? Can anyone confirm? Is the software in the trunk or where located?

What other things should I check before leaving with the car? Can anyone suggest a new owner checklist prior to taking delivery? I am telling them to only wash the car as I want to do my own detailing. Should I stay in the city (outlying highways) and drive around and test all the systems for a day?

I have been looking for an owner's manual to read prior to picking up the car and getting my own manual but can't find one yet. MBUSA does not have them. Thanks for any suggestions.

dont even have them wash it if you are really going to detail it yourself.

Check things out before you even PAY for it.

Check that the car drives straight, shifts gears properly, etc.

Current navigation software is 2007.1 (Part # BQ6460229) released JUL07. Eject the disc installed in the navigation drive (trunk, left side behind panel) to confirm disc version. Monitor transmission shifts however, for the first 1000 miles you will need to keep the transmission in comfort (C) mode for proper break-in. If the vehicle drifts right on level surfaces request that the dealer install camber/caster kits and properly align to allow the vehicle to track straight. You can get a general understanding by viewing the manual available here: http://www.mercedes-benz.de/content/...0001.0002.html

Picking up 550

Thanks for these comments. You would think a $65000 car would not need dealer modification to track straight but good advice to check this as well as the Nav software edition. Yes, I have used the German Owners manual site. Had trouble navigating it until I discovered my right mouse click had a "back" function. I have read the break-in rules and intend to abide by them for the first 1,000 miles. Just hope I have as good a luck with this car as I did my 01 E-430 4-matic. Hardly ever had to take to dealer except for scheduled service.

I understand if I am fanatical about detailing the dealer should not wash. I think I may chance them to this basic task and take it from there. They probably don't want to turn loose a dirty new car to a customer in front of their showroom. They did ok on my previous car but I never let them wash it when it is serviced. Besides, I have to drive 100 miles back to the mountains where I live.

Most new cars have wheel alignment issue(uneven wear). The problem is you would not know it unless you have driven a few thousand miles. Get the dealer to agree a courtesy wheel alignment for the first 10K miles.

MBUSA allows for wheel alignment for first 12 months/12,000 miles whichever comes first.
