Great Gas Mileage
Last weekend, with only 800 miles on my new E320, I decided to treck out to the hills of West Virginia from D.C. I got GREAT mileage, almost 35 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg up and down WV hills! Wow!!

Reason
That's actually the principal reason I stuck with the 320 (even though I love the v8 - which I had in my old SL500).

the gas mileage is much worse than my E430...
i have to fill the tank once a week now...before it was every 1 1/2 weeks...it gets annoying since winters coming and it cold to pump gas..

Performance does have its price, but in this case I'm not complaining. Besides, almost any luxury car today only gets average mileage AND requires premium fuel... so make sure you belong to a Costco or Sam's Club to get good gas prices!

Gas Mileage on E500
Can anyone share what mileage they are getting on the E500?
There are some posts showing excellent mileage with the 320 but nothing I have seen on the 500. Is it that bad?

My '03 has 1800 miles on it. . . . my significant other and I drive conservatively. There truly isn't that much difference in the mileage between the two engines. The voice of experience. Peter

Should be Better
Peter,
Your numbers seem low to me. At least for my area and my driving habits. Does your freeway driving include some stopping and going? My 35 mpg driving is mostly "stopless" and at 50 - 60 mph for significant stretches of highway.

Southern Ca. driving habits:
Yep, our mileage would be better here, I'm certain if we would stick to 50 - 60 mph. We average roughly 75mph on open stretches of freeway . . . . and slow to an almost crawl when in proximity to LAX. You're right about that. Peter

Mileage
Thanks Peter.
That is actually better than I expected. Does this match up with everyone else with a new E500?
If it averages to 17 city and 27 highway I will be happy.

I doubt if it will be that good at all. What does the window sticker say? Those numbers are usually too optimistic. The E320 only gets 19 and 26 or 27 per the window sticker. It is also not fair to just reset the system at 55 mph cruising and check after 5 minutes of steady driving and conclude 'wow, the car gets 27 mpg'. Do a more real world test including accelerating onto the highway, etc. Heck, my SUV will 'get' 70 mpg on a downhill section of the highway but in reality the car averages about 17 mpg.

Barney,
I can't speak for others, but my very good mpg figures are the average result of almost 500 miles driving (to and from and around the West Virginia countryside) on Columbus Day weekend, not a 5 minute downhill test. My 99 E320 4matic wagon was also able to reach 35 mpg efficiency on long trips. Of course, not everyone likes long trips like I do.
