new (to me) cdi, couple of questions

Hey all, I picked up an '06 cdi and I love it. The acceleration is awesome! I drove home and got 35 mpg with 3 people total, and a car full of stuff (total weight of stuff & people, ~700 lbs).

On the way home, the car gave me a warning saying to "decrease oil level." The dealer performed Service C so I am wondering if the oil being overfilled will cause any major problems or is this normal after an oil change and it will go away? I just drove home (3 hours) and the warning came on about 1/2 way home. Also, just for my knowledge, what can happen when oil is overfilled? Thanks in advance.

Take it to a dealer or some other facility that has a "topsider' pump that can extract oil through the "dipstick" tube. Have them remove a pint at a time until the warning goes away.

Our '05's owners manual makes a major point of warning against overfilling the crankcase. Overfilling the oil can cause the crankshaft counterweights to churn the oil into a froth, which is not what you want as an engine lubricant.

Thanks for the response. When the warning came, I was in the middle of nowhere, so driving it for about 2 hours after the warning wouldn't cause a lot of damage, would it? I will be bringing it to the dealer in the next day or so. Thanks again.

That message came on for me after my first oil change in my 98 E-Class. Took it to the dealer a few days later. They kept the car for almost two months while waiting for a new crank shaft.

Needless to say, my next car was a Lexus. But now I'm back in the fold and happy again.

Hi Vegeta...

First of all, welcome to the w211 CDI family! I purchased my 05 CDI several months ago and absolutely love it. The acceleration, ride, and mpg are a combination that NO OTHER car can match! It's a pleasure driving my 73 mile one-way commute!

Regarding the "reduce oil level" light, I had the EXACT same problem with my car when I took it to a Mercedes-only service shop (not a dealer, but all are ex-MB SAs). The CDI takes between 7-8 quarts, and SAs will many times mistakenly put 8-9 quarts because that's what the non-diesel e350 requires. Went back to the shop and the SA removed enough oil so that I was back at 7.5 quarts.

The SA also told me that there is a "range" of between 7-9 quarts for the CDI and that the warning light will go on at the upper end of this range, i.e. >8 quarts. He assured me that it won't do ANY damage to the engine/crankshaft at levels up to even 10 quarts. He said that you really only start to risk the crankshaft when you fill WAY WAY above, like 12 quarts....

Hope this helps!
