Brakes Malfunction, SCARY!!!

So I was driving to work this morning and all of a sudden I hear a grinding noise coming from the rear driver side, I pull over and my rotor is all scratched up and the heat that was coming out of there was incredible, I smelled the grinding of the metal but the brake pad is still good, you can see it has some good meat on it still. So what could cause this, you also hear a squeaking noise when your driving at low speed. I didnt even recieve a brake malfunction or any message on the dash regarding this?

Sounds like the caliper piston froze up. How many miles on the car? Are your aftermarket calipers aftermarket or OEM?

I have only 29K miles on my car, it seems llike the caliper did lock up on one side, but why only one side is my question, shouldnt the whole rear lock up at once? Any way I had the shop reface my rotors and put new brake pads and both sides with new sensors. He charged me $200

The SBC system individually controls each brake. You might want to get that checked.. Last I heard was Mercedes was giving a life time courtesy warranty on the SBC system.

Could of also been some road debris that got stuck for a second, who knows. But get your SBC checked.

Excuse me if i'm not fully understanding what you have said so far.

My understanding is that you have heard a noise from the brakes, found that just one of the pads on a rear wheel has worn down to the metal (all other rear pads are ok) and you have just replaced the pads and refinished the rotors without investigating the cause of the problem......and you are complaining about it?

Or have the rear pads just worn a bit unevenly and the pad without the sensor wore down first? In which case it's a service item, who last serviced you car?
