Question have rubbing issues

Hi everyone this is my first post on this forum but I have been lurking in the shadows for a while. I recently bought a 2007 E550 from Keyes European. This is my first mercedes and will definetly not be my last....

I recently purchased a set of HRE 543s from F1 (btw they rock!) but after extensive fender work I can still not get the front wheels to stop rubbing! The specs on the wheels are 20x9 front and 20x10.5 rear with 245/35/20 and 275/30/20 tires. The car is slammed in the rear and still has a little bit of tire showing in the front.

The tires are not rubbing when i am driving in a straight line regardless of my speed but only when i am taking a turn. Since it is difficult to explain where they are rubbing i took some pics.

Here is a pic of my front wheel:

The tire is rubbing on the outer part of the fender. It is basically like a sharp blade cutting into my tire:

I would like to lower the front of my car to match the back of my car but if that is unrealistic then i will forget about it. For reference this is my back wheel:

The only way to avoid rubbing (at the moment) is to put the car in 4x4 mode by raising the suspension. I have seen plenty of cars on this forum slammed to the ground so please let me know if you have any suggestions and or comments. Thanks for helping a newb out.

is that stock height on your car? Or have you lowered it?

Depending how low your car is, along w/ the fact u have 20'.. rubbing is likely to happen. All i can suggest is possibly more fender rolling. When you ordered your HRE's, did u mention your car was lowered? I would like think HRE would customize the offset to match the ride/height..

I did expect the car to rub a little but at this point it is cutting into my tire. The fenders are rolled as much as they can be but the inner fender isn't the part that is hitting. HRE was aware that my car is lowered but i did request aggresive offsets from them. Thanks for posting that link it seems that the only way to solve my rubbing issue is to either raise the car or buy tires that are not as tall.

I think you may have the wrong size tires for 20" wheels. I believe you should be running 245/30/20 and 275/25/20. That will give you the same rolling diameter as your stock wheels.

have you looked at the 211 fender I dont think you can roll it more, but what tire size are you running 245/30/20 or 245/35/20 is your best choice anything more will rub and no larger then a 285 tire in the rear.also depends on the offset of the wheels what s the front offset, not that you can change them but Front Tire size is most likely the issue.

I tried messing with some camber settings and did a little more fender work. The car doesn't rub as bad as it did before but I am still going to end up replacing the front tires. I am running a 245/35/20 tire in the front at the moment if i switch those tires out to a 245/30/20 tire then the overall diameter of the tire will drop by .96 of an inch and i will lose .49 of an inch in the sidewall height. That should solve the problem!

What offset are you running?

I am running the same rim size on the fronts 20x9 with 245-30-20s, lowered with Renntech ELM and experienced some minor tire rub upon front suspension compresion on turns (driveways, dips). The culprit, I believe, is the +32 mm offset on the front. I am now changing the offset to a +38 mm, reducing the front lip by .25". Offset is the issue, so I think this should aleviate the rub.

Benz-o-rama is correct you should be running 245/30/20 and 275/25/20. I just bought 20's and this is what everyone else also states...tire rack...rims manufacturers...the forum...etc.

So I changed the front tires out to 245/30/20s and now i have no rubbing issues at all. I actually lowered the front another 1/2 inch and i'm still not rubbing at all.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the people that posted on this thread!

Tis a pipe dream right now. I'll get one when I'm done with this one. It's just hard for me to rationalize a 500hp car to sit in traffic everyday. That was one of the reasons I got rid of my Jaguar S-Type R for my E500. Only 400hp in the Jag though. We'll see...

Benzo,

How do you like the R Class? I took my car in for service D today and they gave us a R Class as our loaner for the day. My wife fell in love with it and now we are thinking about getting one sometime this month...

I personally like the look of the ML but I loved how the R drove. Very easy to drive!!!

To put it simply. If you can get past the unusual styling of the R-Class, there is no better people mover on the planet. Get the 500, if you can. We love ours, it's the smoothest riding vehicle I've ever been in, period. It amazing how stable this thing is at 125 mph. Ask me how I know.

I think he is right, But it all depend on the tire brand as well. try to get either Continental or Toyo. That is the only brand that the tire are more rounded.

Sweet ride indian! Thats exactly what I would like except I am shooting for the 2008. Could you please tell me what options you got and if you could mention price/payment? I see your license plate say Thousand Oaks. You in Southern Cali? Near the fires? I live in Westwood.

Btw, I have been a lurker for the past week or so as I started to research my first new car lease/purchase ever. I once owned a 190E 16V modded out car when I was in High School. That car was nothing but problems. But I am sure my new choice of a E class will be good one.

Thanks,

Scott
