What does this mean?

Everything was working fine, I stopped at a shop, and when I come back and start the car - I see a red warning in the instrument cluster --> A battery sign and a "Visit workshop" text.

Does that mean my battery is dead?

ummmm.....it means "visit workshop"

Could either be that the sbc battery failed, battery control unit fault or the alternator isn't charging sufficently. If it started then the main battery is still ok.

Wow. I got the same message this morning and came to the boards for insight. My key thing is that I am about to travel Tues-Friday and was trying to determine how critical it was that I go in today.

Yeah, the MFD warnings are not really idiot lights, but the result of the car's intelligent computer system trying to talk to you. Since most warnings are in B&W, not Red, consider it a very important warning that if not responded to will at the very least leave you uncomfortably stranded instead of in a loaner car for the day.

Losing electrical power while underway with the SBC brakes isn't good.

I called my sales person and explained her the warning message. She said- you can call the roadside assistance and they will replace the battery.

I confirmed, if she was sure it is the battery; And she said YES.

BLUEMONK - did you get your car fixed yet?

It's nothing personal, It's just that MB moved from "idiot lights" to more detailed warnings on the display for a reason.

My personal favorite is the tyre pressure moniter warning "check tyre pressures"........customer comes in the the dealership 3 days after it comes on and says there is a fault with the car and then wonders why they now need a new tyre instead of just a puncture repair.

When the battery goes dead, the car will try to switch to the alternate battery if the BCM is operating. If the BCM is not operating, or the batteries are both super low, you will lose your brakes, transmission, air conditioning, power steering, etc. even while driving down the road. Your dash will light up red with warnings. This is something you do not want to happen to you ever, trust me.

This morning I had to take my car to the workshop to check the "visit workshop" message, and when I start the car; there is no malfunction. I don't see the "visit workshop" message any more.

Anyways, I hope mechanics find the problem that triggered the "visit workshop" message.

Never waste time talking to your sales rep about the cars error messages/malfunctions... most of them have no idea about the the cars workings. Meet a knowledgeable, attentive Service Advisor that you will always ask for and to develop a history with. They have heard it all before, and know which mechanic to reccomend with the shop forman work on your car if it comes to a tough problem to solve.

By this time in the 211's lifeline, a good shop will solve most problems in one visit unless its an obscure problem requiring seldom used parts.

I agree with you Barry;

The only thing that makes me angry is... these sale rep's jumping to conclusions without even analyzing the situation.

Proof that they're clueless about vehicle ownership... now selling cars... They're good at that.

They replaced the 'battery charge module' yesterday and it seemed fine when I drove it home and to the airport this morning. They said the battery was ok.

+1 to this. I've made the mistake to talk to my sales guy once about a sun roof that wasn't closing smoothly. He told me that they can replace it no problem. I went and talked to my SA who looked at it and showed me how to re-sync the motors that open/close the sun roof in under a minute.
