New S-Type Jag v's E-Class
But to answer your question, I would definitely pick E-class over S-type, unless you are talking about the supercharged S-type R that has 92 more hp than a E500.

While its definitely punchier than the E500, it wasn't by a wide margin IMO. The Jaguar R does 0-60 in 5.5, the E500 is like 5.8-5.9sec. Definitely a difference, but not enough to make me consider the Jag only on that merit.

rays, i would have zero respect for you if you bought a jag....we were going to buy one over a year ago, a s-type 30, i think itwas the v6, not v8, and i pushed my dad sooo much we went to the dealer so many times, ans we hated it every time....the build quality is ok....and by the tires, paint was scratched off, and the engine was super noisy.....so now i am glad we bought the mbz, every time we see a s-type we laugh......but i do think it is beautiful on the outside

Im not sure if I'm going to get an E500 or and the S type R... its hard. Both have killer styling, beautiful interiors, good reliability... I just dont know. The R is faster, but the E is larger and more comfortable... in the end I'll most likely get an E500 because the dealership is 20 minutes away, as opposed to 2 hours away for the jag.
Price is definitely not the only criterion for comparison.
Consider: the BMW vs MB comparisons are:
M5 vs E55(210)-- ~ same base price
M3 vs CLK55--$20,000 difference
540 vs E500-- ~ same base price
745 vs S500--$10,000 difference
X5(4.4) vs M500--$7,000 difference
Throw in Audi A8 vs 745 vs S500 and you get almost a $20,000 range, even though all car magazines consider the above groupings to be head-to-head competitors.
Most of the car magazines weight value pretty heavily when cross comparing in the non-exotic market. They like to downgrade MB for being too expensive and they like to credit BMW and Lexus for relative cost efficiency (most models).
And I'm saying that if you're in the market for a $45,000 car, as the problem originally was, not for $80,000. If I was in the market for an $80,000 jag, I would go for an XJR, not an S type R. Which is completely comparable to an E55, especially with the new model lineup. In the 60,000 car market, it is negligible whether the E55 is better, since its not in the price range. For example, I am a college student, have no large scale income, so I can only truly afford an E500 comfortably, though in reality if I truly wished I could buy an E55, or even an S55. But seeing as I'm NOT in the market for a car like that, I'm only looking at $60,000 cars. IE, an E500 or S type R.
your in college and you can ONLY afford an e500, your very lucky, not everyone can do that, but like it was posted b4, price isnt everything....look at amgs post, it makes sense
