Watching DVD while in motion....

Is there any possible way to be able to watch a DVD while car is in motion besides swapping for a Euro Comand?

Before I purchased my '08 E350 last month, I was going to buy a Pioneer Avic Z1 for my other car. There are a couple of different ways to make the DVD work while car is in motion. I was just wondering if there was with this unit.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you want to do it, I'm pretty sure it can be done. Probably the same devices as for W221 would do. Search eBay.de or the W211 forum, if not shown here or at audio & telematics.

I just got a quote for a NAV TV method of doing this. According to a well respected shop here in Dallas, I would be able to view DVD or other video source (I already have the VizualLogics headrest DVD setup istalled), on my US spec COMAND screen, AND control my iPod with the OEM steering wheel controls w/ display for around $700 + labor (est under $200). For another $200, I could have a tiny back up camera integrated into the license plate frame (since I don't have Parktronic) - and have it display on the screen as well. All sounds too good to be true? I haven't seen much on the Forums about NAV TV, but was familiar with them in my E39 days......anyone care to confirm or contest this?

This is definitely possible and not terribly hard to do. The shop will install the so-called Multi Media adapter (runs about $325) that would allow them to plug multiple video sources into COMAND units. Essentially, your US COMAND screen would become a video screen and display whatever video feed is given to it. You would be able to watch DVDs and also integrate a rear camera into the system. I am not quite sure about the IPOD integration though. There is a cable that can be purchased from MB for about $170 to integrate IPod. Perhaps, the shop is planning on adding this cable at the same time as they add the Multi Media adapter.

You can get a Euro COMAND for about $800 but you must make sure you know what you are buying. Try to limit your search to model BE7039 with production date no later than 2005. These units have a loophole that would allow you to set DVD playback while the car is in motion. The loophole has been removed on subsequent models starting around 2006. If you get one of the more recent model you'd have to spend additional $100-$150 for enabling DVD playback in motion. There is a shop on the East Coast that could reliably do it for you.

The US COMAND goes for about $500 on E-Bay. So, it a relatively small investment to switch US COMAND for European version.
