New E350, Old Nav software

Just acquired a new 2008 E350 with the great lease deals they are now offering. The only unpleasant surprise is the age of the Nav SW. The release in the new E350 is 2006.2, not even 2007.1.

It seem that MB should provide 2008 owners the updated SW at no charge when it becomes available since they can't provide a current release with a new car. As the nav box says "Mercedes-Benz offers new, updated navigations discs annually with the most current data available", etc.

Does this seem like an unreasonable request?

Be careful about what you wish for. The 2007.1 software has known bugs. It will route you irrationally and will not permit a route where there is a HOV lane (or at least it will avoid many of the HOV lanes). The fix is to go back to 2006.2 until Navteq fixes the software, so if I were you I would not complain about what you jave,

I believe only certain city's listed above in the DTB are affected by the HOV bug. I have been running 2007.1 for a couple weeks without any issues. However, im not in those listed buggy cities..

Areas: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Washington D.C. – Baltimore, Boston, Denver, Memphis, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Charlotte, Eastern NY, Miami, Nashville, Portland, Seattle, Virginia Beach – Norfolk, Connecticut, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Sacramento, Southern CA; Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

You are running the latest Bug Free Nav Disc. Be advised that NavUpdate discs have almost no discernable differences then the ones they replace except in areas like Boston, where the "big dig" changed many streets & routes. The data on them is over a year old by the time they are burned, so they are hardly "revolutionary" but evolutionary. The Restaurant POI list on them is skimpy & marginal at best.

Sometimes new NavUpdate discs have proven to be incompatible with the software on your Nav/Comand unit, which causes immediate weird display/audio system problems requiring a visit to the Dealer to have the NAV/Comand software updated so that it all works together. While that's not a huge deal, it does take time to bring the car in, and pick up later. Plus its aggravating to slip in a disc & have it screw up the works on the "pride of the fleet" on a Friday afternoon.

I plan to keep my almost 1 year old '07 3 more years and I will never replace the Nav Disc. Their cost versus the improved info on them is not that discernable a difference to justify the outlay.

I see that expectation levels are low

Came from Acura where they did navigation well (a Japanese electronic strength). New releases of software -- and most of these also come from NAVTEQ -- also introduced new function and features as well as updated map detail. When they did run late because of bugs with one model year, they sent everyone the new disk free of charge.

From the above responses, your expectation level is so low all that you would hope for is a bug free release. My expecation would be that they "morally" owe us an updated, correct version, not a 2 year old one. I definitely was not asking for a copy of the buggy 2007.1 but the new, corrected one, when released.

I guess that I need to adjust my expectation level for MB. Looks like they have not trained me yet.

Request a cost free upgrade to 2007.1 as your Navigation DVD should have been checked and updated before delivery mandated by MBUSA PDI (pre-delivery inspection).

If you experience any problems mention DTB P-B-82.85/602a to the SA. You will be given a temporary 2006.2 DVD and Navteq will mail a replacement (i.e.: 2007.2) cost free when updated.

As a WHOLE... How do you like the 350? I couldn't love a current Japanese Lux car as I do this one after driving this car. The emphasis so far with MB has always been on the driving experience. Yes, they're catching up on the Nav unit's design. Then what? This will be a vastly superior driving car with a fabulous Nav unit. It has nothing to do with expectations. ...and remember the error with this Nav disk lies with Navteq, not MB.

I traded my 06 Acura RL mainly as a result of the handling and ride compared with the E350. The RL is solid, reliable, technologically well equiped and boring to drive. In my opinion there was no comparison with the handling and the ride of the E350. So, overall I obviously much prefer the E350. I've also owned a Lexus LS in the past and would make the same comment except that it doesn't handle as well as the RL (but the ride is better). If MB can get a handle on the technology/electronic issues they are going to be in great shape.
