Angry An alternator is this much????

I had my alternator replace in my car because it stop working after I got a jump. since my car is out of factory warranty, I had to use my aftermarket warranty. however the corporate credit card the warranty company uses the dealer don't accept so I had to come out of pocket first. I pick up the car and on the invoice it shows the alternator for $711 and the labor for $367. plus the charged me for 2 screws @ $2.24. I was like damn I need new screws..lol. the funny part was on the invoice in the comments section it stated Voltage regulator was changed at no charge. I figured the Voltage regulator is apart of a alternator?

Actually thats not a bad price. The labor most likely includes diagnosis. As for the dealer not accepting the card thats certainly up to them and its seems obvious they have had a problem in the past doing so. As for the reason of the failure its most likely that whoever jumped the vehicle most likely screwed up and maybe connected the cables wrong. Why are you complaining?? If the warranty company is reliable you will be compensated in full but in many cases that does not happen with aftermarket warranties. You will see, only a little time will tell.

According to this link:

http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...-e-class-2.htm

The estimated cost for an alternator would be $950. So you are a little on the high side.

Those must be some really good screws... sounds like government spec by the price...

Hey sosh,

what happen to the good old days when the diagnosis charges what waived if you had the work done by them. . the credit card the aftermarket warranty company uses is Discover card and the dealer don't take it.

I have seen aftermarket alternators for E-class cars in the $150-300 range. BUt you never know if they are any good. And the dealer is unlikely to install any non-MB part. You would need to go to a smaller shop.

Good old days are long gone sorry to say. The diagnostic equipment and tech training are quite expensive and thats most likely why there is no longer a free diagnosis included. Having had a couple of retail businesses in my life I can say that There are legit reasons why they will not accept discover.

150 amp with pulley $250 from Autozone rebuilt with guarantee. Probably takes an hour to put it on. Course a new one would probably be better.
If you disconnect the battery and you have the tools, it should be plug and play.

I agree. It is a simple job to replace the alternator, a lot easier than a brake job. MB dealers just charge a lot for any job. By the way, Big Mel, in the future if need any work to be done on your MB, you can go to a MB specialist independent shop in your area. Their quality of work should by better than the dealers and at a much cheaper rate.

There is a very popular one in Edison at Rt 27 & I-287. I think it is called German Car Shop, 732-287-8959. I don't have any personal experience there because I have an extended MB warranty They specialize in Bimmers and MB. Each time I drive by, I see a lot of cars there for service. Hope this helps.

I feel the pain with you. Mine had to be replaced a couple of weeks back. Price including tax was $1,205 at the dealership. If it ever goes out again, I will go the rebuilt alternator route and have someone other than dealership install it.

I guess $711 was not that bad as far as new ones go. I looked up some online oem parts web sites and the allternators was $900 new...
