I did test it on mine while parked. I put a masking tape on front and rear of the car (taped on body and wheels). It does lower while stationary. But the weird thing is... once it lowers and when I switch it back to Comfort mode, it doesnt go up. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. I need to get this checked.
Park your car on a level surface in comfort mode and let it idle there for a couple of minutes to let the airmatic settle. Then try your tape exercise. I will bet you that it doesn't lower.
Why do you think it didn't raise back up when you switched it to comfort?
Hell, my car will raise as stop lights and lower when I park it. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. I own two MB's with airmatic and they both act the same.

I was browsing some other stuff related to Airmatic and found a reference to the vehicle height settings. The document I was reading at least claimed the car would lower at Sports 1 and 2, except if it is a US model.

Re: Airmatic
I would agree with the consensus that your 04 is probably fine based on your post.
Not directly relevant to your question, but I will add that there is a lot more suspension activity going on with airmatic on my 07 550 Sport than my 05 E500 had. The 07 car always seems to sit a little lower, however, Comfort is softer, Sport I is similar, and Sport II is firmer than the 05 was.
I suspect that the later (07 up) US cars may be tuned closer to the Euro Specs, as my 07 does seem to drop/raise a bit when switching between settings at a stop light (the 05 never did that), and it actually corners pretty well with 18" wheels in Sport II, or so I thought until driving a C63 last week, but that is another story.
I find the overall suspension tuning in the 07 to be little better across the spectrum than my 05, although the faster steering ratio and the 17 vs. 18 inch wheels my have some impact on my perception.
