'03 E500 - Service Indicator Reset/Correction

I think I did something stupid yesterday. I got my first oil change NOT done at the dealership. I watched the entire procedure and everything was just as 'up-to-snuff' as it would've been at the dealer.

Following the oil change, the technician asks if I wanted him to reset the service indicator. The first questions out of my mouth was, "do you know how to do it?". He said, "yeah". I'll admit I don't know how (never had the need to know, yanno?).

Anyway, he gets in, turns the key and starts pressing buttons. He then hops out and says 'OK, all done'..

I go inside and pay and leave. I get a 1/4 mile down the street and I get a message saying "Service D exceeded by -27362 miles".

I don't know what he pressed (confirm cancel) or something....

But I need to get it reset correctly.
I was only 1200 miles from the next scheduled service.

I'mma read my manual tonight....
Is there something I can do to fix this myself??

It's obvious, I won't be doing THAT anymore...

Since no replies, I assume the only way to fix this is by SDS.

Go to the owners manual and find the reset oil page. Follow it exactly and it should correct your problem. I did exactly the same thing and had the same reading as you do. The dealer reset mine but I have also followed the manual for oil change and it will correct the FSS to include clearing the + when you install new brake pads. Give is a shot.. use the manual.

OK, I understood the service was NOT done but I now understood that the oil change was done but the FSS reset was not done right. I thought he would want to go back to the old FSS "miles to next service" reading.

Possibly but I don't know how to do a go back and the mercedes owners and shop manual don't cover how to "go back". But I do know it will clear and given normal maintenance was done at a b or c service the reset won't be that critical. Other option it take it to mercedes dealer pay $$ and have them reset.

Rolling back FSS reset

It seems to me I recall seeing an option to cancel a confirmation. I believe choosing this option will roll back the FSS to the previous state even if you have been driving around awhile after the most recent FSS reset. In your case you should be reset to about 1200 miles to the next service. I don't think you can go back more than one "confirmation". I assumed this an option in case the dealer accidently confirmed a service when it was not actually performed.

It's been sometime since I recall seeing this so I may have wrong about this option. If you search for "FSS reset" on this forum or some others you should find the step by step procedure for doing the reset.

I was able to reset to service indicator with no problems.
After confirming the Standard Oil service, the next service indicator set itself to 10,000 miles.

Thanks vettdvr, for the advice. You ROCK....

Glad it worked for you. The 229.5 oil under the standard oil is the Mobile 1.

If you set to standard oil you will be alerted to change oil a bit earlier than normally signaled. I assumed you used Mobile 1 0w40 or other approved oil.

So it is ok to get an early signal to change oil and don't worry, but next time notice the 229.5 under the standard oil and if you select this your oil change interval will be around 14,000 miles vs. 10,000.

Thanks again..... I'll be sure to choose the 229.5 next time...

Since you're so knowledgable, lemme ask you this... Somebody else asked about exhaust tips and you mentioned it'd been asked a zillion times before. You mentioned Silverline tips, so I went searching. I'm only coming-up with diesel truck tips. But I did find one set. What's your opinion on these?

I'll trust your judgement. You know I helluva lot more about these cars then I do....

Thanks, again.....

The tips look good eventhough I don't use them. I have used Chrome tips on my Corvette that attached in a similar method. The clamping method and chrome thickness is what determines a good set. They appear to have a good clamp but can't tell about the chrome thickness. But on what I see if you want chrome tips these would be worth the try given the moderate cost.

Thanks for your observation and 'endorsement' (relatively speaking). They will be ordered before the sun sets.....
