thats wierd, i would think it would be set, but to use the wipers you push the turn signal lever towards the sterring wheel one click, that will do one swipe, one more click will add the water

On your wiper stalk there are 4 positions 0,1 11.111
Rain sensing (automatic feature) is position 1

To see whether it's working, get a water squirt bottle.

1. turn on engine.
2. turn wiper switch to position #1.
3. squirt water on sensor which is located behind rear-view mirror. The more water you squirt, the faster it wipes.

If the rain sensor is defective, the wiper defaults to intermittent mode: One swipe every five seconds.

See Your Dealer

Lot's of these rain sensing wipers are defective, according to my service rep (including mine), and need to be replaced. That could be it, too, unfortunately.

Mine too. Mind of its own. Usually works but often gets stuck in "on". The dealer said "no record of fault in computer" and did nothing!

Here in Toronto, the dealer spend over an hour explaining the various features of the car during delivery.

improved wiper sensor

At the "On Track" session MB held in Richmond, they also had a tent set up "presenting" the new E. The zone trainer went over all aspects of the vehicle for each group. The W211 sensor has been improved and now has 4 sensor "eyes" in order to better respond to conditions. I believe my C320 just had one "eye". I'm a Rain-X proponent, and I live where there is little slow traffic and very few overhead street lights, so I seldom operate the wipers. If you can't see, just drive faster! :p

Rain-X

Available at Wal-mart, etc, yellow bottle, alcohol based. About $4 and will treat the windows a dozen times or more. (Make sure it is not Rain-X "anti-fog"--that's something else, and I do not like it.) You apply it in a circular motion to the windows, let it dry to a haze, and remove it with a cloth. Thereafter, for about 30 days, rain will bead-up and repel smothly up your windshield as soon as you go about 35 mph. I have made 5 hour drives in the rain and never used a wiper. I like it, and have used it for over 10 years.

Drawbacks: It will cause a momentary flash of glare as you pass under a street light, and all the water beads reflect the light. This does not bother me. It needs replenishment after about 30 days. Some people dislike it, but I would not be without it.

I went to the Summit Point accident avoidance course many years ago, and afterward we were asking the instructors what we could do to make ourselves better and safer drivers: Rain-X and ABS were his only answers. I gave Rain-X (and ABS) a try and have been a believer.

I live right on the oceanfront, and it also prevents water spotting and residue that would invariably build up on side and rear windows. Since Rain-X, no problems.

Just another comment on the rain sensing wipers.

They seem improved over my 2001 ML but they do seem to get stuck, at least for a while going way too fast. They may start off slow but then once they speed up, there seems to be a very long lag before they eventually slow down sufficiently as the rain lets us and this results in a lot of dry, noisy wipes. My solution to this is to quickly turn the wipers to 'off' and then back to the rain sensing position. When it restarts it seems to go at the appropriate slower speed. Kind of annoying as the system should do this automatically. I did get caught in a heavy downpour yesterday and the wipers sped up appropriately.

Questions: Does anybody think the situation I described above is a fault that might be correctable? Also, as each of us has a different sense of how fast we think the wipers should go in different conditions, I would hope there is some way to adjust the sensitivity or response of the system. Do any of you tech experts know if this type of adjustment is possible?

Similar Experience

Barney,

I had the exact same wiper behavior before my wipers went totally berzerk. I don't know if the problem you describe - and by the way I adopted the same "fix" as you did - is normal or a harbinger of the system breaking down.

Same here. This is no doubt a software error. The 2001C I owned before did this perfectly, so no doubt they can get it right again.

MB< are you listening? Is there a software fix yet?
