My stock 2004 E320 Wagon plays MP3's !!!

I just burned a data CD with a bunch of AAC audio files and a few mp3 files, and inserted it into the in-dash cd player on my E320 wagon, and it played all the mp3 files, while ignoring everything else on the disk!! What a surprise that was! I was able to navigate through the various folders and play whatever mp3 files happened to be in those folders.

I thought i had to modify my deck to play MP3s ?? Anyone know why I have been blessed with this feature? My E320 in an Oct 2003 build.

In Europe the early vehicles fitted with COMAND were all upgraded when the vehicle went in for any type of maintanance\servicing. I have a January 2004 buld vehicle and I certainly have not modified the deck, or played with the Engineers Menu. It's a great freebie upgrade and also very impressive.

John

I have an 04 also. I picked up my car last October. At first MP3 data CD's didn't play through the in-dash player. But a previous thread on this site explained that updating the software would allow this. I did update, and presto! MP3 plays. I kept my fingers crossed and put the same data CD in the changer. But no luck there. From the threads I read this is common.

It's cool isn't it?

My 04 E320 plays MP3s. My 6-disk changer does not, but the single slot does. I think that it was enabled when I had some Navigation software upgrade, but it was right after I bought it. My build date is March of 04.

I am still contemplating buying a changer that will also play MP3s.

Im just curious by what you guys mean by data mp3 cd. Are you burning the songs to the cd through itunes or some other program or are you just taking the folder containing the mp3 and putting the entire folder on the cd and burning it?

Now do the same thing with the same MP3, but this time put them on a DVD-R. Mine reads DVD-R fine.

If that test works, you will be able to put like 1500+ songs on one DVD-R and be rocking...

According to the owners manual (at least for '05 MY), the in-dash single slot CD will play mp3's.

I know, mine says that also. Many of them came with DVDs instead. You might be pleasantly suprised when your DVD-R plays...

All I can say is try it. Just dont expect to play video from DVD, thats a totally separate issue. The US Spec comand do not play video, but many have DVD readers for the single slot..

Is it possible to do this on a 2003 without navigation?

The nav functionally is a totally separate function. The ability of the head unit to play DVDs or not has nothing to do with the nav drive in the trunk.

Your 2003 most likely came with an Audio50 (with a tape deck). I have no information on if those ever came with DVD drives.

All I can comment on is my Comand that actually came out of a 2006 CLS, that I installed into my 2003. And it does play MP3s from a DVD.

All I can recommend is to make a DVD with some MP3 and try it. It will either play them or not.

My 04 E320 (Jan 04 build) had a DVD in the head unit. The software upgrade gave me the ability to play mp3's from the DVD. With 4G on a CD, there is no reason for iPod for this car. My 05 E500 was the same. The replacement for that car, an 08 E550 will play mp3's but not from a DVD -- only from CD's (but the CD changer will also play mp3s). Not very consistent on the part of MB, and not very nice to go with CD rather than DVD in the later models. Not the kind of decontenting I like (though this feature is not a make or break on purchase for me, and I knew going into the 08 that I would not be able to play mp3 DVD's)
