Changing the oil is easy. Do a search on this site and you will find the details. My E500 03 does not have a dipstick. Yes I use mobile 1 0w40 meeting 229.5 spec. I only use MB fleece oil filters.

You will have to go under the car to remove the drain plug if you don't have a dipstick.

The oil is checked on the FSS in the maintenance area. This is in the owners manual. Basically when you see the maintenance due window continue to the next menu until you see the check oil level. However if you have run the engine it wont check until you have shut down for about 10 minutes.

The transmission doesn't have a dip stick and is sealed. If you want to buy a tool they can be had for about $80 or so just to check the oil level. Otherwise if it doesn't leak it's full. This is why regular maintenance is important on the Mercedes.
