It's probably DVD+R or DVD-R,they're the two most compatible....

For the E-class, in the single (COMAND) unit.

But remember, murman's answer may not applicable unless you have a 2004 model as he does. It may be different for other years. This DVD MP3 playback ability seems to be different year-by-year.

Oh, it's even muddier than that. My COMAND is a retrofit taken from an 05 or 06 E or CLS (I can't recall; didn't keep detailed notes from the vendor of the used COMAND I bought).

I burned it onto a Dvd+r and it plays in both the single unit and the changer.

Good Luck to all

And the changer???? That's the first time anyone's indicated such. I thought I heard that DVD-based changers were only avail in the new S-class.

I would then also presume that you're not limited to the 99 file count of a CD-based changer?

Its not really 99 file limit on a CD. What you can do it put them in sub-directories. COMAND can only display 99 files per directories.

A lot of info displayed in this thread should be kept in a sticky,as the questions here have been asked many, many times in the past.

DPR, how did you get it to work? I burned MP3s using NERO and the COMAND drive and the CD changer says "CD Error". What's the remedy? You are playing it in '08 E350, right? Thanks...

In theory, yes. With my CD changer, however, while there may be more than 100 MP3 files on the disk (broken down in album subfolders), the changer will only read and play the first 99 files. This limitation is not present within the COMAND unit, be it CD or DVD.

What you did not say if you are recording on the DVD as a DVD or in CD mode. A DVD recorded in CD mode will only give CD type capacity.

I used Nero 8 to record on DVD+R and DVD-R; neither of these can be read in the single (MP3) or 6-CD slots in my 07 Command unit.

As reported elsewhere, earlier US Command units had DVD capability and can read MP3's recorded on the DVD.
The bottom line (it appears) the 07+ US Command unit is designed only to read CDs, there is no way we can get it to read a DVD recorded as a DVD since the head in a DVD player is different from the head in a CD player.

Yep, closed the session. Tried to burn 2 different ways. 1 -- data disk, other Audio with MP3 disk. Both times got an error. Any suggestions? But 1st -- do I have the capability in the '08 model to play the DVDs?

PB, so how do I need to record the DVD for it to play in the COMAND unit? Thank you.

My conclusion is, it is not possible to play an MP3 DVD in our COMMAND units; these are now designed only to read CDs. This is perhaps another sneaky change by MB from previous years. One could replace the COMMAND with a European COMMAND version; I'm not ready for it.

Yes, I am also pulling my hair out on this one; I sent this question to MBUSA.

This really doesn't have anything to do with what burner SW you are using but rather what drive is in your unit. Earlier head units had a DVD drive but was later changed to CD drives. There is a chance - CHANCE(!) - that units with DVD drives also will be able to play DVD in motion with the correct SW update.

A far as MP3's on a DVD, it all depends on what drive you have not how the DVD was made, session closed, etc. For that matter, you can use the drag/drop method in Windows XP and Vista and burn a CD and it will work just fine.

That sucks, I also though exactly that untill DPR333 posted that he was able to play DVDs... Maybe it was the Euro COMAND, or just wishful thinking. DPR, please shed some light on this.

I'll try that also, I'll explore all options...

From what I understand it'll only play DVDs in 2004 E-class or 2006 CL... right? '07, '08 do not have the capability, correct?

05/06 CLS. While I have an 04 E, my COMAND is a retrofit from a CLS.

Too bad they killed the DVD option. Has anyone tried sticking the MP3 DVD into the Navigation drive? That should be a DVD-based drive... This guy mentioned that the method works on his X5.
