High Pitched Break Pedal Noise?
#27
Here is an update. My dealer traced the noise to the master cylinder replaced the upper break line. This got rid of the noise. What then happend however was that the warning lights started to come on (intermittently) over a 4 day period stating that I had increased breaking distance. I also had a leak on my garage floor this was back in December. Long story short, I was told it was just a computer reset issue (the warning light) and that the leak was packing grease from the factory and all was fine. Fast forward to a vacation about 1000 miles from home and a different warning light comes on stating that my break fluid is low. The car sat in an out of state dealership for 5 DAYS while a new break cable was shipped from Germany. The part never arrived, so they just tightened the breakline and bled the breaks - which took 2 days itself I'm told...I finally got back to work about a week after I was supposed to be home. No response to my inquiry about trip interruption compensation or follow up. I'm now told that I should have my home dealer replace the cable (why I'm not sure). This whole thing has me in orbit. That being said, the noise is indeed gone and the breaks appear to be fine.

fly by wire
mb only implements "brake by wire", i think all the fancy stuffs i saw in the fighters will be moved to the cars.
how about "drive by wire" (iDrive was implemented partially by BMW) and "HUD" (HUD was implemented by GM's cars which is cool because you don't have to look at your instruments while you look on the roads.) "drive by VR" (not only cell phone but you can drive your mb by issuing orders, Infiniti implements part of this feature)
HUD stands for "Head-Up Display" which projects driving information on the windshield. actually, it can project any useful driving information to windshield, such as images from rear mirrors and the directions from NAV, etc.

I get the same high-pitched, hearing test type noise. Just picked up E320 Saturday, built 12/6. Knew about noise from this forum. Can only hear it if radio is off. Not bothersome enough for me at this point. Will wait to hear what others report.

How about the SL500 Sensotronic?
Like etenn, I'm either too deaf, too old, or don't have the high pitched sound, but since the R230 (new SL) has had these brakes for over a year, perhaps someone from the W211 forum could describe and post their experience on the W230 SL500 forum and see if there's any commonality or a solution.

mike--yes. Although I do not hear it otherwise, if I depress the pedal, door open, engine off, I hear the slightest high pitched whistle, it only occurs during downward pedal movement, stops as soon as I release. Maybe right rear. I could not hear it until the pre-pressurizing pump shut down, and I was in the garage but I don't think I'd hear it outside, and I do have pretty fair hearing. I hope this assists you, let me know if want anything else.
Is this like the old joke---"Doc, it hurts when I do this....." and the Doc says "don't to it"?

320 only
maybe this is only in the 320?
either way, i'm going to the dealer on sat (1/25) to get my front license plate thing installed (drilled into the front bumper). i spoke to my sales guy about getting that done, talking about tinting my car, and the high pitched noise so maybe i'll get some info.
like i said, it seems pretty minor to me and i was going to just live with it. i just think it's a little odd.

The backside of the wood wheel has indentations for your fingers - I guess you can say it is "notched".

2003 E320
I have a 2003 E320 with 1500 miles. Have the same high pitch noise, mostly when braking. Strange. I thought I was hearing things (too many clubs from years ago).
Keep tracking down the noise. Please post if you resolve.

Gregg. In my case the traced to master cylander and replaced upper break cable. This corrected the noise problem. However I then had break fluid leak after the "fix" - went back in shop, they bled entire break system and tightened the cable fitting that was replaced. This was about 2000 miles ago - no problems since then - and no more high pitched electronic beep from pedal. Good luck!

High Pitched Noise (e500)
I purchased a 2003 E500 for my wife a couple of months ago. The car has 47K miles and is still under warranty. I am trying to address all of the issues with the car before the warranty runs out.
One of the issues that has been bothering me is an occasional high pitched sound from the engine. It typically happens when the car is cold. I noticed it on the first application of the brake and the sound remains even after I have released the brakes. It disappears once the engine RPM exceeds ~2K. It is difficult to recreate the problem once the engine is warmed up which make it hard to show the dealer.
To me the sound is high pitched and sounds like the sound of a freight train from a distance. The sound has a metal to metal feel.
Also in general I am disappointed with the sound of the engine at idle. The engine sounds like a sewing machine. This is the first mbz in my family. Prior to this we have all different flavors of BMW and they all sounded nice at idle.
Anyways I would appreciate any insight that people may have. So far the dealer has performed some of the Technical bulletin on the brakes, Replaced motor mount and recently replaced the idler pulley.
Thanks, David

Add my 2006 e350 to that high pitch noise.
Well, you can count me on that noise too. It happens when I pressed the brakes, even when the car is not moving. I still have to check if I hear it with the radio off. Could be an amplified noise over some loose ground in the electrical system. It is annoying, specially if you are listening to the radio at a very low level. I will try to record it soon... let me know if your noise happens even at a light, as it happens to me.
