One head light is purple
did you just buy the car? are they Xenon? i recall reading in mercedes service literature that when a xenon individual bulb is replaced it will differ for some time to the shade of the other one, hopefully it was replaced and will become more normal with time.

I thought this mismatched bulb colour was part of a mysterious electrical problem I've been having where if I don't touch the car for several days, the battery would be drained, but I saw another E on the road today and noticed his passenger light was also peach.
Guess it's time for new bulbs... wonder why it's always the passenger side that dies though. And I always thought HID lights were supposed to be ultra long lasting.

Mine is also purpleish on the passenger side. Call the parts dept and ask them.
I'm wondering if it will damage anything if I don't replace the bulb before it blows? There doesn't seem to be many sources to get a deal on these bulbs except to go pay $300/bulb at the dealer.

Once you determine which one you need, then go shopping for the best price. You don't have to buy them at the dealer.

which one do i need to replace?
how can i find something similar to the headlamp on there now? just need left side changed...
You can visually check which bulb it is by turning on and off the high beams. Halogens normally don't change color and simply burn out.
Although it's more expensive, I normally switch bulbs in pairs. Both are getting the same amount of hours and one really shouldn't burn out before the other one unless there's a defect. Also HIDs need time to burn in and a new one will always appear to have a different color temp until after a period of use. But it's your choice, you don't have to do it in pairs.
You should also check the ballast. And be sure the thing is igniting properly (no flickering, etc..) The D1S bulbs have an igniter included in the bulb mount but the D2S doesn't. Just make sure the whole projector/headlamp unit is operating perfectly before you buy bulbs. They are normally not exchangeable with many vendors. Usually an HID system should last pretty much the life of the car, so I'd just check to be sure the electrical components are all working correctly.
