What does this do?

On the 2003 E320 there is a rubber "mat" that "fits" very loosly in a holder that is in the glove box lid.

Anyone know the intended use for it?

capt, if you dontr smoke, that is what it is used for, you can take out your ash tray, from below the radio, to take it out, get on the right side of it, and push it to the left, or something like that, and when you take that out, put the runner mat, we use it for money and change, also, you can take out the middle holder in the glove box, it makes a alot fmore rookm

bmms8-

Are you trying to say to put the rubber mat in the hole where the ashtry was that you just removed?

Why? Just to set things on?

Where did you get that information??

bmms8 is right. The little mat is to replace the ashtray insert if you don't use the ashtray. A nice touch.

There was a thread a while back that discussed this along with the brackets, etc on the glove compartment door.

bmms8 or anyone.....can you find that thread and reply to it so it is reactivated? I went back and could not find it. It had a great picture of the GC door with a sticky note pad and mini flashlight installed. I would like to see that now that I have my car.

Lots of people on here who did not see that thread and no doubt would like to see it.

I hope someone can reactivate that thread about the glove compartment and the mat for the ashtray. I just could not find it.

The "mini flashlight" "bracket" is on the left side. There was discussion over what it was for and someone came up with the idea that it held a minimag just right. Also the holder on the right was used for sticky note pad. There was a great picture posted.

rubber mat

My car didn't come with the rubber mat. I called the dealership and they've never heard about the ashtray insert replacement (aka rubber mat). I called the mercedes customer service number and they hadn't heard of it. I emailed customer service and they said they were "researching" it and then never got back to me.

It Exists

The little rubber mat really does exist, and putting it in the ashtray makes a very nice little storage area. (The power outlet stays so one can plug in ones iPod.

I had heard about the rubber mat on this forum. When I picked my car up last week there was no rubber mat in the glove compartment. I told the salesman I wanted my mat. We went to a new E-320 on the floor and it was in the "holder" on the GC door. I have one but the buyer of that new E-320 won't unless the dealer figures out a way to get it.

I seems that the only ones who seem to know about this are on this forum. It is a very nice touch and makes the ashtray very useable. If you did not get one I would whine until they turn one up. They do exist and should have been in the car.

There should also be a moonroof emergency crank. It also was missing in my new E-500 but had them get me one out of another new car. The "crank" is described in the manual.

Sad

It's sad that so many of these new cars are not completely equipped and that the dealers appear to know very little about them.

I'm running out to find the power outlet to pulg my 20G iPod into.

Are you using the AC adaptor that came with the iPod and the firewire?

Rubber mat and crank

I found my rubber mat inside the glove box inside a bag that had all the manuals wrapped in plastic also. I found my crank in the back handrest - inside the cover that was holding the bigger manual.

For the Time Being

For the time being, iRock, but it's pretty bad. I am told that once the nav system is installed, there will be an auxilliary input.

Rubber Mat in Ash Tray

I found the small rubber mat in my glove box and removed the ash tray and it fit right in the foot print of where the ash tray was. Great for change and even my sunglasses fit in the area not making it more functional.

also, if anyone likes costco, they have a maglite 3 flashlight deal for 16 bucks, seems kind od expensive, but they are very nice flash lights, all metal, with a back up bulb, once is very small, key-chain like, the middle size fits in the new E, and the big one can be for home use, i got the black set to compliment the exterior color, and it fits perfectly, i suggest getting the package at your local costco, this costco down here in san diego, (near RB) has them, i am no sure about others, but i would go check it out

regarding the flashlight

bmw comes with a chargeable flashlight in glove box -- i think it is a good design. of course, you can buy one and leave it in glove box but you have to check batteries always.

BMW

If I recall correctly, BMW was the first to put a rechargeable flashlight in the glove box. It first appeared in the 750IL in the whatever year that model first appeared. (I should remember that, maybe late 80's?)

BMW flashlights are provided so that owners can read the manual to figure out how to operate I-Drive to turn on the interior lights!!
