Battery?

When I attempted to start my car after returning from a 7 day trip, it:
1. Did not crank with gusto...
2. A message came up saying that I could not use any of the aux devices like the seat heater etc. Then the message went away after about 2 minutes.

Car has original battery so its pushing 3+ years. Heard they lasted longer than that.

Any ideas

For what it's worth, I just purchased a 2005 E320 CDI with 24k miles and it has had its battery replaced already. I would assume these cars are hard on batteries with all of the electrical accessories they have.

Same thing happend to me last week when I came back from a 5 day trip. I believe the system quickly self-charges upon restart, and then the warning goes away. If the warning stays on for longer, I would suspect some type of battery failure.

Just 5 days?!?! Wow, so this is what I have to look forward to when my car becomes a few years old. Yikes.

I routinely am out of the country for 2-3 weeks at a time and so far no issues, but of course my car is < 1 yr old.

Guess my options are new battery more often or a trickle charger.

Obviously a case of planned obsolescence! The same thing happened for the first time on my '05 CDI yesterday after it sat at the airport for 9 days. No problems since then.

That's a very useful feature. At least if you keep getting that message as the car sits for shorter periods, you know to get a new battery before the old one leaves you stranded. Whenever I've needed I new battery, the only warning I've gotten is the "click-click" of the starter trying to turn over the engine, and then needing a jump start to get home.
