avg engine temp?

hi all.. i'm an mb noob as this is my first mb. my first car was a bmw e30, so i'm aware of some electrical/overheating/etc type problems that can happen in the long run, but that's not really the question here.

i just haven't really paid attention to it before, but the other day while sitting on the 405 in 5pm traffic, i saw the temp gauge on the right read one notch above 80 degrees celsius. is that normal? my car before this was a 99 accord, and it wasn't ever that high, so i'm just asking what it should be.. and if it's fine where it is now. if not, should i just add more coolant to it or what?

thanks in advanced.

My ML (has the same engine as yours) runs at about 90*C in the summertime, which is about a notch or two above 80 as you stated.

The '08 E350 that was my loaner car ran about 90 deg. which I found to be about 10 deg. higher than my E500. IIRC, it was a tad over the half-way mark on the gauge (that's why I noticed it). But I imagine that is considered normal operating temp. but best thing is to consult your owners manual. It will say for sure what is "normal".

I dont have an E-Class yet but I can tell you my C230 runs around 90 degrees too, as well as the loaner cars I've had in the past.

That sounds perfectly fine. If you start approaching 110º then you need to worry, but it could even hit 100º in summer traffic jams with the A/C on high.

be careful, adding more coolant will not make the car run cooler

You

are just fineAfter all the thermostat is set to full open at 87C ,Down in the OC it never hurts to add a bottle of redline water wetter to the coolant tank.Makes the coolant have an easier job keeping your engine cool on those beautiful hot socal days and lubes the water pump at the same time.

If the coolant is full, can I just add it to the reserve tank? In the past, I have used this redline product line, from oil to water wetter. It's work. I am a true believer in redline water wetter.

On hot days (80 degrees or above) with air conditioning running, my temp runs to 90 degrees Celsius. Never really had it go above that.

With cooler outside temps and/or with no air conditioning, my temp runs around 80 Celsius.

Just checked the 2004 manual. It says that operating temp up to 120 degrees Celsius is fine -- that temps could go that high in "severe operating conditions". Anything above 120, stop the car and get out the manual says.
