Wipers Gone WILD

I recently had a cracked windshield replaced on my 03 E320, ever since the wipers will 'sometimes' come on at night... when there's NO rain.

Is it the glass/sensor/other? Wierd... someone help!

Check for blistering on the inside of the windshield in the area of the gluing surface of the Rain Light Sensor (RLS). Due to tolerance of the gluing process, peeling may occur on the optical portion of the RLS, which may cause the RLS to trigger without rain present or not trigger with rain present.

Is that the part directly above the rear view mirror?

Who replaced the windshield? Is the replacement windshield OEM or aftermarket? Whoever replaced the windshield should replace it with OEM glass.

I think that may be the problem, it was aftermarket!

It wouldn't be the glass, but rather the installer/installation of the sensor which looks thru the glass from inside. If it is damaged or partially or intermittantly blocked, it thinks its raining.

I've called them up, and they say they will "check it out". Should this concern me? And is there a wasy for me to visually inspect the sensor area for oubstructions prior to taking it in?

I had my windshield replace a few months ago. I first allowed the insurance company to send their prefered vendor out to replace it. They showed up at my house and when I asked about whether the windshield was OEM as promised. They looked and realized that not only was the glass not OEM, but was for a W211 with a panorama roof, which I don't have! They were also supposed to have the white Daimler sticker but didn't. That glass had the sensor preinstalled ready to plug into the wiring harness at the rearview mirror. I not only sent them away quickly but called both the vendor and the insurance company to tell them that I was going to have the windshield replaced at the dealer. I then went to the dealer who only uses OEM glass and has the Daimler sticker. They also performed the state inspection and installed the new state license sticker. It did cost me about $200 more to have the dealer install the windshield but they installed it in their climate controlled shop where the OEM adhesive was properly cured, not in my driveway with some brand X superglue.

Can you just turn the wiper switch OFF for a while until you figure out what is really going on. This is to prevent scratches on your windshield.

OK, they couldn't figure out what was wron with it so they changed the windshield. Wipers now work fine.

But... the winshield is aftermarket and it doesn't appear to have a tint to it. Is this ok or should I go back and have it changed for another one?

Your choice now that they are working fine. I went with the OEM glass because of the MB logo in the corner of the glass. I felt that having non-OEM glass might be a detriment when selling the car.

The newer windshields don't have that fade tint at the top. The Mercedes sticker is available at the parts department. The part number is visible on the sticker. Check the dealer's lot for the proper logo. (They're different for different years)

There are NOT many companies making glass for the 211 since it is a relatively low volume car compared to the usual USA fare. It is a good piece of glass. Relax & Enjoy.

Thanks, I feel alot better now.

But I can't remember, is the windshield supposed to have a tinted color like other windows in the car. It does have the tinted part on top but what about the rest of it should it have the same green tint?

Hold a white piece of paper to the inside of the glass thru the open drivers door. As to its color, Its a different piece of glass made at a different time. Even glass from the same manufacturer made at different times in different batches can vary in tint. BTW the mfg of the glass's name is on the windshield. Who made it?

The glass is stamped Saint-Gobain Sekrit. My other windows are stamped Sekrit... might be the same.

But now I've noticed that I get really grappy radio reception. Could they have damanged/disconnected an antenna wire in the rim of the glass?

Does the glass have the Mercedes 3 pointed star above the words Saint-Gobain Sekrit?

On the other windows, yes; but on the replacement, no.

Very interesting. Saint-Gobain Sekrit is the mark on the OEM windshields with the MB star above it. I wonder what the difference might be other than the star logo?

It might be that glass shipped to MB has the registered TM mark, & others get the OEM glass.

Just so you know... its a good piece of glass.
