I think one is confusing the W220 as a previous generation E-Class, but it is the previous S-Class. The S hasn't had a manual transmission since before the 1981-1991 W126 model.
The W210 is the previous E-Class and the W211 is the current model and yes they both have manual transmissions in the Europe on various 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel models.

That is wrong. At least I have not found any W220 that would have had a manual tranny (from the factory). Almost all are using some variant of the 722.6 auto box, a couple of exceptions with the 722.9.
