is it the tires? Does Kleeman sell something to remove the limiter? Its very annoying. It stutters right when it starts to pick up big speed. 130+. what a jip.

A quick ECU adjustment will fix that. I completely agree, the limiters are a joke.

And I safely returned the car smoking to the dealer and the sales man couldn't close his mouth.

Big brother doesn't think you need to drive that fast so he slipped in a speed limiter when you weren't looking.

You speed limitation is strictly tire related. For the US market, W211 non-AMG models are fitted with all-season tires. This is done for durability reasons - given customer's dislike of replacing tires every 20k miles. In other markets, the limitation is set to 155 mph as the cars are fitted with "summer tires" or what we would call high performance tires. In these markets, they typically fit the car with "winter tires" during the colder months. If you go to the aftermarket for higher speed, I would strongly recommend upgrading your tires as well.

RE: Speed Limiter

Your tires are the same as mine. They are Michelin HXMXM all season, but are V speed rated, or good for 149 mph.

Agree that the 130 limiter is tame for the 550, but have left mine stock so far as it has plant of go power as is, and we of course have those pesky speed limits in the USA.

To keep inexperienced fools from killing themselves and others.

silberrosa is right. It is related to tire durability, and the lawyers mandated it.

Why are you looking at sites instead of what is printed on your tires?

Even if the tires are V rated or Z rated, your car is limited to 130 so you wont catch up to the AMG boys. I think my E63 came with Z rated tires but I can't go past 180mph lol.

noone has a need to exceed the 70mph limit.. or for that matter, noone NEEDS an E550, or E55, or Maybach. I wonder why they sell them?

People have been killed at 20mph, so 134 isn't the "magic" number.

why do you have a blown Mustang? lol

I think the Pet Shop Boys said it best, "A question of need is a question of taste."

I usually drive well over 13X mph (210 km/hr) in a W211 E220 CDI (no limiter). The idea of having a limiter on a car is completely stupid, on that car the driver can set the limiter depending on the tire rating. MB started putting limiters in the US in the mid 90's to save money on tires.

Although, I enjoy laughing whenever some douche in a newer car (that I know will be limited) tries to outrun me when I'm in my "slow" old 560SEC.

People sell everything including guns to make profit. But do you buy gun just to kill somebody? Certainly not, the same with speed limiter. You need to protect youself and be able to escape from a fast driving killer. So every car should have emergency speed booster allowing to reach 200mph or even more, just for our protection.
