Then why not leave it in Auto? In your case there's no apparent benefit to manually shifting between Off & Auto. The lights will "automatically" stay off in daylight while in "Auto", making manually putting the switch into "Off" for that reason not necessary..

On all the time (constant) with xenons & almost 110k miles on an '05...have yet to replace any part of the headlights and bulbs still shine as they did on day one with no variance in color.

In short tunnels, in underground parking decks, etc.. It's just not worth having them going on and off all the time.
It's good to have the choice, imho.

I'm also on the 'DRL on' camp (with auto headlights). I just wish MB could've made the parking/city lights as the designated DRLs (LEDs would've been awesome), instead of the main headlights. Now it looks like you're driving with the lights on. DRLs are fast becoming styling statements e.g. BMW's angel eyes (on 09+ models), Audi's famous eyeliner LED strips and the new W212 LEDs.

I'd normally keep them in auto but parking in a garage means they go on and off unnecessarily. On when I'm in the garage and then off the minute I back out. Repeat again when I go back in the garage.

Thanks for reply Diesel Benz, sorry for confusion :P I mean that when I turn the knob clockwise the 2 outside lights turn off in the park position with the inside lights still on however once I drive they turn on. I've seen E classes in my area driving at night with the middle lights on only and it always got to me how do they do that lol.
But ya just wondering how it's done like that.

I agree. IMHO, they could have EASILY made the 2 smaller lights by the grill "permanent" DRL's by putting a more powerful bulb in there and wiring it on a separate circuit that is controlled by the "DRL: Constant or Manual" setting in the MFD (instead of the actual low-beam headlights). IMO, that would have looked better. I wonder why MB didn't decide to wire up the DRL's that way... I mean Lexus does it that way (although it's a permanent setting for Lexus).

To drive with only your marker/parking lights on, just click your headlight switch 2 clicks to the right from "0" (1 click past Auto)... although you should probably know that technically it's illegal to drive with only your parking/marker lights on in the U.S. (headlights need to be on as well in order for it to be "legal").

Thanks for info, however whenever I turn the knob twice to the right, 1 past the auto, all 4 lights still come on, must I program something within the car computer for this to work? I've tried turning the knob over before turning the car on, and only middle lights come on, however the moment I start the car the xenons come on. I own a 2003 E320 in Canada.
