Could be even easier to retrofit to a car with Audio 20CD.

I thought so, too, but I watched the screen with my own eyes as the sales consultant tried to configure the luxury trim with leather upholstery when I placed the order in late April, and the MB internal ordering system wouldn't allow leather without the sport package.

Either your salesman did not know how to use the ordering system or there was a computer error. There are two interior configurations that require sport package, one is a two-tone interior (either sahara/black or cognac/black) or the black birdseye maple trim. If he tried selecting one of the sahara or cognac leather options, it would order the sport package, but those are not available in vinyl either. The black, grey, and beige interiors are available in the non-sport version is leather or vinyl, and only with burl walnut.

This might be old news, but here's a brief overview of the new COMAND head unit.

Well, it was at post #40 at this very same thread. But worth for a reminder in my opinion.

If it was a computer error, it seems to have persisted for quite a while: leather was unavailable w/o sport package when I ordered the car in late April, and it still wasn't available in mid-May, when I changed my order from RWD to AWD. Has anyone here succeeded in ordering a non-sport 2009 with leather upholstery? If so, I'm curious about what your build date was. Did I just order mine too early?
Meanwhile, mine got built without leather on 6/18 and is en route to the US. So the good news is that I ended up saving a lot of money, as well as saving some lucky cow from becoming upholstery.

Agreed, I hadn't expected to be able to get the sahara/black or cognac/black leather interior without the sport package for MY2009, as those colors have been exclusive to the sport version in past years -- but what I tried to order was cashmere (beige) leather, and the ordering system wouldn't allow that, nor grey/grey or black/black leather.
