Steering Locking Up While Turning at Low Speeds
Since my search turned up nada, here goes.
Sometimes, while turning at low speeds over slightly rough surfaces, the steering locks up then releases. It's like it hits a stop then releases. Anyone know what this is about?

Your saying it "locks" you mean the steering column is locking? Or are you just saying it gets difficult to turn. If its the latter it sounds like your power steering fluid is low/the pump is going out.

The steering column is not locking and it's not like the pump is going out. While turning it's like you hit a physical stop, then it releases. It's not that it gets difficult to turn, it's impossible to turn for about a half a second, then it releases.

03 E500 and Corvette
My Corvette was recalled for steering lock problems. The NTSB was tracking this failure. The failure was from the locking pawl allowing the steering wheel to lock while the car was in drive and moving. This is a MAJOR Safety issue. IF the problem is from low fluid pump failure etc,, not as big an issue but if it really is steering wheel locking, I reco you take it to the dealer immediately. I would also suggest you file a safety report on NTSB if the dealer determines the problem really is a steering wheel lock situation.

I had a domestic vehicle that had those symptoms. It was a failure of the rack and pinion. They had to remove the motor mounts, jack the engine up slightly off the frame and replace it. It was very unpleasant, financially. I hope yours is something else.
