2008 E350 4MATIC SUSPENSION NOISE

Hello, I have a 2008 E350 4Matic. There are 2 issues that appeared the first day after taking delivery of the car. (1) I noticed a loud clonk when braking for the first time while backing out of the garage. It is then quiet for the rest of the day and only re-occurs at first brake a few weeks later.
(2) While driving over a bumpy road there is always a terrible loud clunking from the suspension. It sounds almost like the balljoints are loose. It does not sound as bright that one would suspect something hitting steel on steel. It rather sounds like excessive play and a muffled low frequency rattle.

I took it to the dealer and they found nothing wrong. We took a similar car on the showroom floor for a test drive and it sounded even worse.

Is this a know condition? Is there a remedy? I am ashamed of taking passengers who normally praise the car due to the noise.

Thanx

We have the same thing going on - on a 2008 E350 4matic Sport - that is a week old and has about 550 miles on it. It almost sounds like a squeak especially when going over bumps but it is noticable on flat surfaces as well. Has anyone had that problem? We are thinking it might be a broken shock or misaligned shock (we had a misaligned shock in a Pontiac Grand Prix that made similar noise but not as loud and that was the diagnosis). We are going to take it into the dealer at the end of the week. The dealers demo - also a 2008 E350 4matic Sport - did not show this noise.

Well, I took my car in today to have the suspension issue looked at, as well as the alignment issue I've been having after not even 1000 miles, and got no answers. I left the car at 7:30 and as of right now, the service advisor told me they have not even had a chance to check out the problem.

Hopefully I'll have an answer Monday, but at this rate I'm not counting on it.

Update:

After much complaining to the service advisor, they looked at my suspension today. Turns out the problem was a loose seal around my left front shock. They didn't have the part in stock-- will be getting it from NJ by tomorrow AM and I should have my car back tomorrow after work.

Definitely ask them to check out your shock/seal around the shock. I suspect we had similar problems-- the parts are probably from the same production batch.

Final Update:

I picked up my car this afternoon. According to the service sheet I received the dealer had to replace the left front strut, shock and mounts-- basically the entire shock and strut. Good news-- no more noise going over the speed bumps.
