Folding mirrors
How do you fold external mirrors? I tried to do it by pulling hard on the mirror casing in horizontal plane toward the back of the car. The mirror doesn't lock in the folded position and returns to normal. Morover, parts exposed (tension spring on the hook, some wires, etc. ) don't look like they were designed to be exposed to the elements. I don't want to experiment further out of fear to break something off. Is the mirror supposed to fold fully, or is it partial folding action to prevent damage in garage accidents?

US-spec W211 mirrors DO NOT FOLD
search this group on mirrors for more info. non-us cars can order electric folding, but US cars get no folding of any kind, only BREAKING OFF.

Gethen: US mirrors fold (deflect may be a good word) back and forward as a damage and pedestrian impact feature, but they don't lock in place. Others on these boards have mentioned that electric folding mirrors may be an option outside the US.

Correct.
I ordered folding mirrors,option#500,for the car.
It is operated by a button near the mirror adjustment dial.
I think if you can order it, it is a worthwhile option as it can save you grief in the future.
