I bought my E new, but bought my other car CPO. While they do recondition items, CPO is more geared to the mechanical operation of the vehicle. You still need to do your home work. I asked for and recevied a complete copy of everytime the vehicle visited the dealership and the cause, i also did a complete visual inspection underneath the car on a lift at the dealership. Try not to be in a hurry to drive the car home (i knew this was the car i was going to purchase, but didnt tell the salesman) i waited a week, but went back several times to look at the car again. So far ownership of the car has been fine.
Trust me prior to signing the dotted line they will accomodate your every request, after you drive off it off the lot it may be a different story.

I took delivery of my 2006 E350 yesterday - it's practically new with less than 15,000 miles. It has every option you can think of (sports, xenon, nav, dynamic seating, rear shades, etc). I am extremely satisfied with my new vehicle; also the dealer management & staff were very understanding and courteous to get me in and out of the dealer quickly - awesome purchase experience!
Thanks everyone for your feedback and support - fortunately my story has a very happy ending after all.
