Question Nav Installation : Help

Folks,

I observed yesterday that in my trunk on the left there's an opening & inside it there was a wire (black wire marked red) this looks like an antenna cable, had a female jack (I'll post pics). Also, I saw a hanging plug in Jack .... seems like this one fits into the Navi trunk module ..... Can someone confirm if I'm all set to plug in the Nav ? Is it just plug n play ? How many more steps involved to get the nav up and running ?

Just out of curiosity, Is a Garmin GPS better than our w211 Command Centre ?

thanks all

Hoo boy! There are many many units better than out pre '09 COMANDS/NAVI... but the MB Navi does work well enough to get you there. Problem with portable units is: the suction cup mountings & dangling wires are very unattractive.

The GarMin Navis are probably the easiest/best/most complete. For instance on a Garmin, if you are looking for a Staples (Office Supply Story) It will list the ones near you with their phone numbers, so you can see if they're open.

Yes but why not find the address and phone number with Google Maps on the phone or some other application when you are anyway going to call them? Myself I prefer on-line search features via cell phone services which leaves the car the task to guide me to the address I found with my phone. The limited POI and other data on Comand is no issue then as long as it recognizes the street address where it should be good.

By the way, there is a very good DIY guide for the Navi processor retrofit, a search would help.

One of the things I HATE with my Jensen GPS is that when the destination is a 800 ft away, it would say Arrived ... now you're stumbled in a radius of 800 - 1000 feet trying to find the damn destination .... sometimes it was on the other side of the highway .... freakin Jensen sucks ..... I almost threw it out the window last time ................. I hope the mb's navi is accurate in this regard ?

the garmin Nuvi 680 is what i have in the 07E-class and in the 07 sl i have the build in comand gps
in my opinion, the garmin as a gps outperforms the comand gps by far
there is an mp3 player of the sd-card,a very easy bluetooth connection with phonebook for your phone, the only thing i dont like is the fm-connection to the radio.
i got the whole works for the price of the bluetoothpuck in my sl can$ 325.-

Then you're gonna hate the MB nav just as much. There is no way to enter an exact number for a street only the range. It really sucks when it takes you 2 blocks away from where you're going.

The OEM MB Comand is far from perfect..

But it is OE and WILL do the job..Also IF you have the EURO Comand

You can watch DVD in Motion and TV if so fitted

I'm afraid this isn't apples-to-apples comparison in the sense that the Comand you are referring to is pretty old by design (I know the old design came with new cars still recently). But if you compare to the current NTG2.5 Comand, the GPS accuracy with the on the roof antenna cannot be outperformed by any current portable device, it has "an mp3 player", plays windows media too, it takes an SD card (don't remember if it was any card with a PCMCIA adapter like on a W221 or W204, I think it was an SD card without adapter), it also supports BT HF calling and phone book download. It also has HD space for music. Not a lot of functionality missing if compared to the list of garmin features (I believe both use gyros, at least some modern portable devices have real gyros for navigation, they lack the speed signal but gyros make the big difference, or lack of difference in this case).

Price is still an issue Comand struggles with compared to portable devices.
