You can use any oil that meets MB229.5 specs. The oil you are looking at is not approved. Check out the 0W-30 TOTAL Quartz Energy 9000. It meets the spec and will improve fuel economy over the-40 weight oils.
Also, the Mobil 1 5W-40 is a 229.51 spec oil. It is only for the Diesels.

I am pretty sure that my (2003) has another FSS schedule for those people that want to use conventional oils / filters. This may be a holdover from an older service schedule. Nevertheless, the reason the syn oil is required is for the extended change schedule. I don't want to get into a flame war but I am confident that any premium 10-30 or 10-40 oil with a good filter could be used with 3000-5000 mile change schedules. NO doubt that the syn oil is a more wide spectrum application. I just don't think that the motor will disintegrate unless Mobil is in the crankcase.
Since most here are trying to maintain warranty coverage and since the extra expense is justified by the longer interval, there is little point in experimenting but I can guarantee that somewhere in a 3rd world country there is a w211 taxi running thousands of miles a month on whatever oil is avaialble.
