I think the fact that most of the luxury car owners simply don't own a penny worth on the cars they are driving!

Hey Dema, what just a minute!! They told me I was King.

ps, brand new, paid cash. Well, a check really, 'cause the cash wouldn't fit in my pocket. I hate buying used cars and/or leasing 'cause that's all I could afford when I was a young'un. Brings back bad memories of my tormented young'un days.

Um, yeah

I don't know if you recall, but my first post here was trying to get away from performance cars and to be sensible. So, I got an E350.

I guess once you have had performance cars in the past it's like a virus or a drug. It's really hopeless.

So, I sold the 350 to a relative. And picked up the E63. I don't like the W212 so much and I got a good deal on the last of the W211. Also I'd wait a few years for the W212 to work out the bugs.

I took a hit with taxes/fees (lost on the first purchase) but I can write-off up to $4500 now for next year (new "stimulus" package deal with the govt.) And I lost some depreciation (but worked a good deal for a family member, so all is well.)

The thing I like about the E63 is that you can drive it like a Grampa if you want (and still get decent mpg) or like an idiot (me)

Once the addiction is established, there's no turning back. A really sad state of affairs.

ps, the suspension is "AMG tuned" and I can say that it's a lot tighter than the E350. And the steering is way less boosted. It handles much differently. Flatter, better turn-in, etc..

48- used CPO, wrote a check for it.

Cant afford new- for me, having a couple of CA mortgages and mouths to feed, buying used depreciated CPOs have been the prudent route.

Learned back in my 20's that signing away for a new car and then watching it depreciate to nothing before I got done paying for it was really dumb

I'm not dumb and you're not dumb.

We all do what works for each of us financially and psychologically.

Sorry- certainly did not intend to imply anyone being dumb for financing a car.
You're correct- to each his own.

To clarify, it was a dumb move on my behalf.

Nice. Yeah, it seemed the 350 just wasn't for you. And agreed about the fact that if you're gonna lose money on it, at least a family member can benefit from your loss, which makes it work out. Also agreed on the W212, I think you'll be much happier with getting the strongest year of the W211 and the highest model of it available.

Before I got mine I was soooo close to pulling the trigger on an E55, then toward the end of last year, when cars prices were nose-diving, I was thinking of moving to an E63, but I guess (lucky for me) I'm just not as enthused about performance oriented driving as I once was, so I stay with the wolf in sheeps clothing.

Yeah, I've heard that AMG really did some extensive work to make the E63 more than just a powerful E-Class, really put work into the handling/braking, etc.

No problem. We just have to remember that we all do things in a way that works for us at a given moment in our life. Which may not always seem logical to others.

fwiw, I didn't finance, I paid cash from under my pillow. I own my house and I have zero debt. I don't like paying monthly payments or interest on anything. And it took me a long time to get to that point in my life. And I also know that cars are something that have no real value other than a certain degree of utility and personal satisfaction.

How much one decides to spend on utility versus personal satisfaction is where it becomes an individual choice. And that will change at different periods of one's lifetime. Pragmatism becomes somewhat relative.

K-A, I see that you got a new Malibu. Is that your daily? And/or your Vegas transport?

I'd say it's the best sedan GM has built on a long time. Nice interior cabin, imho.

Here's an interesting review: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/che...malibu-review/

Yeah, just picked it up as the Daily/Vegas beater!

I gotta say, I did soooo much research on different cars in its class, taking everything into account and equation, and this car won with flying colors.

I even thought of buying another "cool-car" per-se, but fortunately my conservative side got a hold of me, as I realized I need something that I can just use and abuse and won't fail on me, or cost me an arm and a let, etc.

On top of that, I did a long and hard thought process on whether I wanted to essentially sell my E in a short while, and opt for a new car in the premium market, but really settled in knowing that I really like this car, and don't think anything else will get my lust for quite a while in terms of what I like out of my cars, and do think it has that truly "classic" look that I will enjoy for a while if I choose to.

But yeah, the Malibu ROCKS man, I'm so happy with it, GM did a great job. I really enjoy the carefree driving and ownership experience of it so far. It's got a great cabin (even has ambient lighting), double-plated glass, which makes it a great and quiet cruiser, is even pretty coddling to be honest.

Best part is, I got it for just under $15K out the door, with only 21K miles!! I figured if I didn't like it, I could just sell it for more than I paid probably, haha.

Thanks for that Link though! I'll check it out right now.

Also good to remember is a fair portion of MB owners lease due to tax benefits (leasing with pre-tax dollars and S / P corps). It is not always the best strategy to own vs lease or pay cash vs finance.

The whole lease vs finance vs owner argument is so irrational.
