07+ E-class License Plate Bracket

Hello everyone.

The top-left license plate screw hole on my E320 is kind of messed up, I thinks it's stripped or something. I was wondering, since the 07 plus E's come with a metal bracket in the back for holding the license plate, can I just buy this part or do I have to buy the whole trunk piece with the new longer chrome strip? If its only the bracket, does anyone have a part number? If it's the whole trunk piece, does anyone know how much it should cost? Thanks in advance.

Sweet, so this is the one I would need then. Nice, I've been looking for this metal bracket. Was worried that I would have to buy the whole new trunk piece. Forget that, I hate the longer chrome strip, too much IMO.

Uh, never mind, not going to work. The metal bracket attaches to the back of the trunk lid with four screws from the sides (two on each side), and there are no holes for these on my 04 E320, only the holes for the license plate itself.

I was led to believe some time back that the screw receiving nut inside the trunk lid is a replaceable item from inside, under the fuzzy trunk liner. Check that out.

Be carefull to use short bolts on the new plate holder . If you use the wrong bolts you will bore into the panel behind the the plate

If your nut is stripped, you can easily re-thread it. Just take one of the screws to a hardware store and buy a tap kit that matches. This will cost you under $10 and 10 minutes.

Ya, the inside is stripped, nothing wrong with the screw that goes in.

How does that piece come off anyway?
I see a rivet looking piece at the bottom (beneath the license plate)
Mine is stripped, too.

I was thinking the same thing. Apparently this is common - I had an E55 AMG that had two stripped but I never dealt with it. Probably some car salesperson using the wrong screw and forcing it in there to hold a tag on.

...and there IS a difference in the screws that fasten the license plate to the aluminum licecense plate bracket on the '07s and the screws that fasten the plate directly to the deck lid holes on the 03 - 06 cars.

The Screws on the '07s are shorter and thicker than those used on the earlier cars. They are Metric sized screws on both, however, not SAE.
