Q's for guys running Magnaflows on E500
Still doing my research into what exhaust mod for my E500... Some have stated "just do the E55 AMG exhaust and be done with it" which I'm still considering and trying to find at a reasonable price... I've also looked into Magnaflow Muffs with AMG Tips using 2 - 14376 muffs and listened to alot of really vague low quality sound clips on Youtube... Ever notice how bad those sound clips really are for the most part...? Anyway, for those running Magnaflows, how's the sound inside the cabin when idling, under normal acceleration, and then when "on it"...? I want to hear the exhaust when I'm driving aggressively, not so much when I'm simply crusing down the highway, and not so much when idling, but definately want more than the stock muffs...

I had magnaflows on my E500 and couldn't stand them. There was a constant drone between 1800-2000 rpm, which is where our 7 speed likes to spend most of it's life. Idle was fine and W.O.T. sounded good but the constant drone drove me absolutely bonkers. Do yourself a favor and get the E55 exhaust and maybe delete the resonator if you need more grunt. You'll thank me later. You can normally find used E55/CLS55 exhausts on here for 700.00-900.00, which is reasonable for these cars.
You've probably seen my youtube clips already...

I knew I'd hear from you Benzo... Yup, I've seen your YouTube vids... And your comment about resonation between 1800 and 2000 R's gets my attention too... Can't stand resonation ... Drove a C5 ZO6 once with Borla Bullets Exhaust and it made me nauseous and gave me a headache... Been surfing the classifieds for an E55 exhaust but none out there at the moment..

Try posting a "Wanted to buy" thread in the W211 E55/CLS55 forums. I bet you get a bite.
I'm also wondering if it was just my particular model of Magnaflow that had the droning problem. Along with gikser, I know that mbuskuhl runs Magnaflows and speaks highly of them. Try giving him a buzz and see what he thinks. He was one of the first in here to have them.

FYI, if you end up with a CLS55 exhaust, it's not a direct replacement. I have the CLS55 exhaust. The exhaust tips stick out too far, so you will have to cut them off and re-weld them.

I have only received compliments on the sound. Of course, I also have an E320 so I can't say how it sounds different on an E500. I do think they are the best choice for the price. If I was to do it again, I'd spend the money and do something more expensive. Not that I don't like the Magnaflow sound or how they came out, it's just the thought that I put Magnaflow on a Mercedes that kind of bugs me. But that's just me. It's not too loud either, at least I've never had a passenger mention it and business people do ride in my car.

A thread I read recently said the CLS55 stock exhaust sounds better than the E55 exhaust, and the SL55 exhaust is better yet... Would you agree that your CLS55 exhaust has a better, more alive sound than an E55...? I drove an E55 recently and had several chances to 'get on it' from a standing start and from 65 MPH and it seemed pretty subdued...
