I never knew this about gas cap location !!
2. Every newish German car I have ever seen has the filler on the right. (but I certainly haven't really cared to look @ every new German car to confirm
)
Maybe Japanese cars put the filler on the left side for driver convenience or because in Japan they drive on the opposite side of the road?
Not 100% true my Father has a 1998 toyota camry and the gas tank is on the driver side but the nozel on the dash shows the opposite and there's no arrow!

Funny story -- during Thanksgiving, I pulled into a self-serve gas station in New Hampshire and all the cars (all of them American brands) at the island had fillers on the left, so I pulled in facing a car with my filler on the right. A woman in a Ford Escape was at the wheel while her husband (or whatever) was filling the tank on the driver's side. The woman had a look of panic on her face as I pulled in, as if I had done something wrong. Then, when she had to back up to get around me, she had a further look of panic, as if she'd never had to back up at a gas station before.
Today I was in a car with a friend who was in his wife's car and he didn't know which side her gas cap was on .. so having read this thread I said 'well just look at the icon ...' and I was wrong!
I then quickly looked it up on the internet via the iphone .. and it's a myth ..

If you read the whole thread, you will see that posts indicate that it is more often correct than not, but that it does NOT apply to all cars.
