1. Rentals are new enough that the triangle is almost always present.

2. Every newish German car I have ever seen has the filler on the right. (but I certainly haven't really cared to look @ every new German car to confirm )

I read the whole thread, this is why i posted the pic to show the nozzle was not on the side of the fuel door.. Yes the arrow points to the side where the door is, so i guess they dont use the nozzle to show location in every car..

My understanding is that German cars have the fuel filler cap on the right side for safety reasons (as the Germans tend to think about these things). In the unlikely event you run out of gas and have to fill from a gas can, the right side location keeps you out of traffic.

Maybe Japanese cars put the filler on the left side for driver convenience or because in Japan they drive on the opposite side of the road?

Not 100% true my Father has a 1998 toyota camry and the gas tank is on the driver side but the nozel on the dash shows the opposite and there's no arrow!

As his post said "some cars". This indicator certainly doesn't hold true for every car but it's still a handy indicator and makes it easy if it applies to yours or your rental. BTW I think that your father's Toyota may be a fake

I second that. Every German car I've ever had, and every European car I've ever owned has had the filler on the right.

Funny story -- during Thanksgiving, I pulled into a self-serve gas station in New Hampshire and all the cars (all of them American brands) at the island had fillers on the left, so I pulled in facing a car with my filler on the right. A woman in a Ford Escape was at the wheel while her husband (or whatever) was filling the tank on the driver's side. The woman had a look of panic on her face as I pulled in, as if I had done something wrong. Then, when she had to back up to get around me, she had a further look of panic, as if she'd never had to back up at a gas station before.

I hate to break the 'myth' but the icon does NOT always indicate which side the filler cap is on.

Today I was in a car with a friend who was in his wife's car and he didn't know which side her gas cap was on .. so having read this thread I said 'well just look at the icon ...' and I was wrong!

I then quickly looked it up on the internet via the iphone .. and it's a myth ..

That link doesn't break the myth. To quote "I wish this was true. It makes a whole lot of sense for this to be true, but I can’t confirm it. I read about it on a Brazilian blog about cars and the contributor claims that this is true, but perhaps only for Brazilian cars? I am not sure." Just the author's opinion that he/she can't confirm it..

If you read the whole thread, you will see that posts indicate that it is more often correct than not, but that it does NOT apply to all cars.

My first Mercedes had the filler on the rear of the car. Of course, it was a 76.
