Is "the book" wrong?

The official M-B Maintenance Booklet for the '09 E350 (part# 230 584 10 95) says to change the transmission fluid and filter at the first 40K or 4 year interval (pg. 28), but then is silent (!) on any recommended future change intervals.

Such silence regarding future changes seems pretty odd.

Comments on this "sin of omission"?

Panama Jim

Hi All !!!
I'm a new MB owner,,first time too,,I live in the Republic of Panama, and the car I bought from a gal who was the original owner,,It was purchased new and has been maintained only the dealership.
My searching reveals only three minor recalls,,which are entered in the owners manual.
The car is in pristine, as new condition. It has 28,700 miles ( 47,000 klicks)
The car was often garaged while she went various universities. It was supposedly started every month and driven enough to move fluids and lubricants around. This was suggested by the dealership.
In short I'm very particular about my vehicles.. And in reading various articles that indicated it is best to change the tranny fluid before the maintenance cycle.
Does any body on this forum have suggestions, advice, or comments they would contribute to the well being of my new ride,,,Sincerely,,Jim

Panama, change the tranny fluid, it has been sitting in there for over ~8yrs now.......it is time or milage whichever comes first......so you are up for a drain and flush.....

Changing the transmission fluid is probably the easiest way to save money. The filter costs next to nothing from a dealer ($15), fluid is accessible and does NOT have to be bought through MB dealer, unless you want to support your local stealer. I don't remember off the top of my head which one, but I used Febi fluid that I was able to order through NAPA. The funny thing is that the container was exactly the same as the MB fluid, minus the MB sticker. As for not being able to drain from converter on a 5-speed, simply drop the pan couple times when you change your engine oil and flush it that way. I've done it 20k miles ago and the transmission shifts silky smooth.

You need to drain the tranny fluid in the torque converter. It holds a lot of oil.
