Smile Monday: New E500

Monday will be a long day of waiting. I get my new E500 at the end of the day, a true test of patience.

I looked at both the E320 and E500, but fell in love with the E500 - and the power.

I enjoy this forum and the helpful advice and tips from all members.

E-500
Thanks, Benggolf.

First driving impressions will follow shortly, if I can get out of the car. When, or if, the weather improves, I'll post some pictures.

The specs are Brilliant Silver/Charcoal interior. Options are E-1,
E-2, CD changer and heated seats.

Congrats BEC

Yeah 5 litres can be addictive.

Take it easy early on, but rest assured, you will love this car when you get to open it up.

Even if you do have some of the problems mentioned in the forum, you've probably already heard that they're almost always minor and easily remedied.

Pics when you have 'em.

Tough choice isn't it?

211 Sedan or 911 Carrera?

Is it really a hard choice, assuming you can only have one?

Not really a tough choice

Just wanted to illustrate the similarity in chassis num as well as overall market.

I have considered both myself and I think that while I'll eventually go through a Porsche, the sedan is far more convenient and plush with similar performance.

My uncle had a euro 930 and while it was a big grin to drive, it was parked most of the time due to risk of dings etc. Really just a car for weekends.

The E500 is no comparison to the 930 but next to a 911 it probably has quite a few takers that have considered both.

The reason I ask this: if you have your priorities straight, how can you compare to drastically different cars? And don't tell me the E500 has 300hp, because it's about power/weight ratios.

Who's comparing them?

Power to weight ratios. OK.

A guy with 70k to spend is gonna buy a car.

What does he buy?

The one with 100 hp/litre or the one that
has a market beyond the tuner/racer club?

The next time I make a comment, do you mind not turning it into a psychoanalysis?

If you have your priorities straight

Seriously?

I'm just killing time here.

If you're trolling, sayonara.

Why bother?

Hey, I really like the C32 AMG, it's one badass car, but I didn't buy it OK. It's also a very expensive car last time I checked. For about 55K you get something that will beat the **** out of an M3.

At 349HP stock it is very fast compared to a 911 with only 320HP and even considering power to weight.

I've had my fill of 6 cyl forced air engines thinking I could've had a V8.

I had to have a V8.

And, I can add the SC later.

Kleemann makes a great system from what I hear that should put HP at the crank of about 508HP.

That should give me pretty good power to weight, right?

Oh, I'm gonna rip my seats and headliner out too. and put in a rollbar and extinguisher.

I have no clue what you guys are talking about - there is NO comparison between a Porsche and an E500, other than they are both from Germany! When I drive my Boxster S, it hugs the road and I can take corners that would send the E500 skidding sideways with every bit of traction control at full tilt. With my Boxster S, anyway, we're talking about a weight of 2700 pounds versus what, about 3900 pounds, and the Boxster has a center of gravity that is essentially a few inches off the ground, whereas the heavier car in the E500 has its center of gravity much higher, so the increased weight and higher center of gravity result in a worse handling car in twisties. The E500 is awesome, and I love it to death - love the acceleration of the powerful V8 (when it kicks in), love the interior appointments, love the wonderful ride, and love the technology - but the Porsche is a totally different car! We're talking sports car versus luxury sports sedan here - not even the same league. They have far different strengths and weaknesses, and I can't say I know anybody decided between such different vehicles, nor can I say I can even see someone considering such...apples and oranges, baby.

Apples to Apples

OK so I should have said-

"tough choice between W211 and W211"

Those are both apples.

How dense is that?

You don't know anybody who would even consider a MB vs a Porsche?

I give up, you guys win the argument.

Whoa whoa Jabo. I wasn't poking fun at you, and I certainly was not bringing my C32 into the discussion. Furthermore, I wasn't telling you the 911 is the better choice, because for many it ISN'T.

When I said "if you have your priorities straight", I meant to mean, "if you know what kind of car you want". If you know that you want a luxury car that has some pep, is a nice all around car, something useable everyday, then you are not going to consider a 911 for your purchase. If you know you want a sports car that has grand touring capabilities, but is generally devoid of luxury treatments (as compared to a E500), then you will not consider a E500. Make sense?

Now, if you aren't sure if you want a luxury car or a sports car, I understand. Then you don't have your priorities straight, because no side of you (sporting vs. luxury) takes precdent over the other. This is not a negative aspect. This may be the reason I got a C32. Good compromise.

I agree with the apples to apples comment. Compare the E-class to other luxury sedans. This is still an apples to apples comparison IMO.

Exactly

Yeah, I agree, it would be silly to set about looking to buy something like a 911 and end up buying a 211, but if you're just shopping and still love the possibilities of either kind of car, then yeah it could be a tough choice.

Practical and powerful VS Sporty and powerful

That's the only way I would compare them.

Good to get some more of your input.

BTW, I live in Chicago, and without the mountain twisties and warm weather, the 911 would be wasted. Here everything is very flat and straight and boring from a driving perspective.

Leaves little to compare, for a driver.

I'm waiting until I'm back in the right zipcode to get the Carrera, if ever.

BEC, enjoy your new car tomorrow. You will enjoy it more and more. I do recommend that you take it easy for the first 1000 miles and then gradually "use the throttle fully". Besides being better for the car, you will be less intoxicated by the rush so you can enjoy and learn about the other features.

Oh.... yes.... see what fun our forum is? You started a perfectly wonderful thread about your new E500 with what was apparently your first post as a new member and were filled with joy and look what happened. Jabo makes a perfectly respectable and nice comment to congratulate you and about 911 versus W211 and some people have to jump down his throat. After that, all but a few posts are bickering about whether or not anyone might consider a 911 versus a W211 and whether someone should even say that.

BEC, stick around. It is pretty entertaining, really!!! And, some of us actually care about your big day tomorrow-the subject of this thread. I for one, am one of them. Keep us posted (perhaps in a new thread!!!) Good luck and enjoy.

Jeff
