rough idling

2004 E500 w/ 60k mi. When the car comes to a full stop relatively quickly (say from 40MPH to a full stop in about 3 or 4 seconds), the idling is a little rough and the car shakes a little for about 5 seconds and after that the car idles smoothly. I can reproduce this about 50% of the time. However, if the car gradually and slowly comes to a full stop, the car idles smoothly. Has anyone experienced this problem?

I had the same issue with the 320 and it turned out to be the engine mounts and an overdue service. Had the service done and the mounts changed and it now runs like new. The dealer knew exactly what the issue was when i mentioned it to them so I would suggest you do the same.

I've scheduled an appointment to have it looked at next Monday. The car and the steering wheel shake a little at speed higher than 75MPH. Other than these little problems, the E500 is an enjoyable machine to drive. It's way more comfortable and luxurious than the BMW 530i.

I just got back the car from the dealer's shop. They have fixed all of my complaints. The car now idles and shifts perfectly smooth -- as good as new. Gear shifting is smooth from 1st to 2nd gear. Idling is quiet & smooth -- can't even tell if the car is running. The dealer replaced the valve in the transmission and also changed the tranny fluid and filter-- that too care of the intermittent hard shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. They also replaced the valve cover gaskets, and a couple of vacuum hoses in the engine compartment -- that took care of the rough idling I believe. They also did the 4-wheel alignment and replaced two front tires, and that I think took care of the shaking at 75MPH. All were taken care of under the CPO warranty, except the 4-wheel alignment and new tires. I'm really happy w/ this dealer shop and the CPO program, they know exactly what to look for and fixed all the problems. The dealership is Smythe in San Jose. The service advisor is Troy. I'm really happy w/ their work.

That's good they fixed it and congrats, but I would have hoped they would have taken care of all that stuff before they sold it as that's part of what we pay extra $$ for with these CPO cars....
